If you want to fuck with the Chinese then the best option is to do... nothing... While China definitely would love some data from their little balloon, what they definitely DONT want is for USA to just ignore it.

Why? While intelligence and counter intelligence is complicated ill provide 3 reasons.

1: Because whatever the Balloon would find out is not worth the trouble of shooting it down, meaning the data they are collecting is worthless.

2: USA is not interested in the instruments on the balloon, because they already know all about it from THEIR spies.

3: Like number two, but instead of USA just knowing about the design and features of the balloon they would have known about the entire mission of sending the balloon before it happened and Chinas intelligence network is completely compromised.

Of course, it might just be because USA is afraid of shooting it down causing collateral damage but as with any intelligence conflict, the truth is not important. What is important is what MIGHT be true and then you fall into an endless spiral of self doubt and start firing your best and brightest agents because you fear they are working for the enemy.

While shooting it down would be easy and all that, it does not actually damage China in any way. Causing them to question what they think they know and the loyalties of their own people.. well that is going to cause far more damage not to mention pull anything they MIGHT find out from the balloon into question since again, that might just be the next layer of deception planned by the enemy that WANTS you to think whatever the data is telling you.

Again, threading this path is a one way trip to guaranteed madness and something USA really would not mind if China stumbled into head first by USA simpy not doing.. aaaaanyting.

You can't just "shoot it down" because that can cause injury on the ground. It's not a party balloon; it's a high-altitude balloon with instrumentation. If the balloon burst, then its going to rain down electronics on somebody's property and possibly kill someone.

However, there's all sorts of things that can be done some of which is probably not publicly discussed on national security grounds. For instance, you could send a jamming signal or other electromagnetic interference at it. Unless it was hardened against that, that would render it's electronics worthless.

Other ideas are more arcane and I can't discuss those.

Anyway, I suspect something more mundane will happen: somewhere over water, a small hole will be shot into the balloon so it leaks and loses altitude but not catastrophically so. Eventually, the balloon will land and be investigated.

Yes, parachutes are commonplace on such balloons when it's time to retrieve the payload. Except that the parachute is deployed when they people controlling the balloon give the signal to burst the balloon and deploy the parachute. The US doesn't control this balloon, so there's no reason to assume any chute, if there's one on board, will automatically deploy.

I can't comment on the data because that actually might be relevant. The balloons path will likely take it near Minot AFB in Minot ND. That is a launch site for ICBMs.

While the military has repeatedly said the balloon presents no danger at the moment yet could do so if it was brought down, there have nevertheless been calls on President Joe Biden to order it downed.

Among those voices has been former president Donald Trump who on Friday wrote on social media: “Shoot down the balloon.”

Earlier, a group of Republican legislators including a Montana congressman called for such action.

“Shoot. It. Down. The Chinese spy balloon is clear provocation. In Montana we do not bow. We shoot it down. Take the shot,” tweeted Montana Congressman Ryan Zinke.

In his briefing, Brig Gen Ryder was asked if the US believed the Chinese government was controlling the movements of the balloon, or if was simply movings with the air currents.

1: If chutes were such a problem, why has no one made any fuss over them being unreliable or not having any before? Being so adverse to it that you can't even bring yourself to shoot down a hostile target because "IT MAY NOT HAVE A PARACHUTE!" simply is not consistent with how balloons are actually used in reality.

2: I highly disagree. The military gets a certain leeway in the name of national security that the public just can't get away with. In other words, if civilians can more or less just send up whatever they want, with or without a parachute and not have to worry overly much if it hurts someone or lands in someones property, then the military gets a much greater leeway in handling hostile assets for national security like shooting down a spy balloon.

3: We live in a world of satellites, anything that can be plainly seen from above is not really a secret which includes ICBMs. Just sending a spy balloon above one such site is not guaranteed to give you useful information that their spy satellites won't already know. But this brings us to one of my points, if USA already knew the capabilities of the spy balloon and therefore knew what information it would collect by flying over an ICBM site then they can make the judgement if it poses a security risk or not.

As for listening to their official statement right now, I am not really inclined to believe them. No offense, but this incident has entered the information war stage and public statements like this is about controlling the information and using it against the Chinese. They are not talking to the public, they are talking over your heads to the Chinese and they are pushing propaganda. As your link points out, this is not the first time China has sent in a spy balloon, but what it fails to mention is how COMMON it actually us. I obviously dont know myself but its probably around like 20 or more a year. So what makes this one any different?
