Is it racist to call someone by their name and not their ethnicity?

Recently, my friend and I were called racist because we think it's disrespectful to refer to a person you know and everyone else knows by their race or any other traits. My friend gave an example using me. I'm Mexican, so my friend said it would be disrespectful to say, "Hey, Mexican boy, bring me some coffee, please", vs saying, "Wally, bring some coffee, please". We never even mentioned anything about it being racist but he said that we were racist for thinking that. He also said, "only right wing extremists think it's racist to not call people by their ethnicity". Do you think he's right? Do you think he might be insane or just a typical race baiting liberal?

Thank you all for your opinions. Wow! Clearly you all think he has some type of mental illness and also has a very low IQ. I don't like to pick on the UNFORTUNATE but sometimes they need to be put in their place. Racist is not a word that should be thrown around as a way to end an argument when your losing. I actually feel sorry for him and will try to support him in any way I can. Again, thank you all!

I can't speak to that being racist. Because being Mexican is not about "race".

I can only speak to it being offensive. And if you are calling a person that, and they tell you to stop, but you continue to do it anyway, you are being offensive.

I think that is basic common sense.

There is no such thing as some universal standard for what is offensive.

I think that's why he got so angry. He realized he was the one bordering on racist behavior, so projected it on us. My friend even went out of his way to say it wasn't about race but being respectful. His reply, "you're both racist".

That wasn't the issue. The issue was, my friend and I were called racist because we considered it disrespectful. In other words, his thought process was, NOT wanting to refer to someone by their "ethnicity" is racist. We even said, "neither is racist, it's just disrespectful". His reply was, "racist creeps". Of course, like I said, he was the only person that injected racism into the conversation. I think he's insane.
