I NEVER meant to "empathize" as in "whether it should be considered "justification". I meant to "empathize" as in "whether to understand his/her frustrations and anger".

Some people just get pushed and pushed and pushed until they can’t take it anymore and then they snap and resort to lethal force to avenge themselves for the oppression they’ve experienced.

Most mass shooters probably have some psychopathology and at least some trauma history, so it is of interest to learn of these things and to think about their role, if any, in the subsequent behavior. I am a Psychologist, and I don't study this for the purpose of constructing a justification, but rather in order to better understand why this happens and to contemplate possible methods of early identification and prevention.
