What is the purpose of the second amendment?

George Washington said the purpose of the Second Amendment is so a well armed population can rise up against another evil government and kill the evil leaders. This includes evil presidents, judges, senators, representatives, military persons, evil police officers who are making unlawful arrests, etc.

for example:

if a police officers lays there hand on you to arrest you and you know you are innocent before God, you havr both a God-given right and a constitutional right to KILL the police officer for making an unlawful arrest with your bsre hands or by disarming him of his weapona nd summarilty executing him, and GEORGE WASHINGTON said so.

Did fyou know when you walk into a modern church and the preacher has body guards and pollice there to throw you out by force if you oppose his doctrine, that is ILLEGAL and if you prophesy against a false preacheer and the police or the body guards touch you, you are permitted by GODD ALMIGHTY to summarily execute them.

in other words you should try not to kill them, but if they keep attacking you and it's life for death you can kill them. That's what i'm saying ideally if you disarmed them you wouuld throw the gun awayf an just rebuke them for making an unlawful arrest if possible.

I am not a gun nut and I am generally left-of-center, but I will give the NRA it's due when one of its lawyers wrote a very good historical piece on the amendment.

Keep in mind that, the Second Amendment, is part of the Bill of Rights enacted in 1791 when our current form of government was only two years old and the Industrial Revolution was starting, but there was no electricity nor assembly-line processing (Eli Whitney would invent the cotton gin in 1794). I bring this up because it's important to realize that, at the time, guns were not quickly created.

There are fundamentally 3 reasons why the Second Amendment exists, two of which are really moot in the present day.

Guns in the hands of the people...

  In the 232 years since the 2nd Amendment, science and technology and military capabilities have advanced so far that this reason is now obsolete.
  
  If America is safe from other hostile nations who have nuclear weapons, then America is safe from any rebellion involving Billy Joe Jim Bob and his Proud Boy/Oath Keepers/3%er friends or anyone else like them who are armed with guns. The array of weaponry and other assets that the military and Federal Government has is mindblowing. Fuck not with the US Federal Government if it gets serious. Ask Osama bin Laden who became fish food in 2011.
• quickly enables the creation of a local army ("militia") to fight a rebellion or invasion.
  
  In the 232 years since the 2nd Amendment, science and technology and military capabilities have advanced so far that this reason is now obsolete.
  
  In creating the National Guard, Congress basically created militias that are under state control unless the Federal Government "nationalizes" it during emergencies. For example, this is what happened in Little Rock Arkansas in September 1957.
  
  And, of course, we now have a full-time military that spans the continent and much of the world.
• enables people to hunt and defend themselves.
  
  This is not obsolete.
  
  In Pennsylvania, this was a serious issue. In its early years, Pennsylvania was a state that was dominated by Quakers who are pacifists. At that time, there was no Bill of Rights and no 1st or 2nd Amendment. The 1st Amendment established the "wall of separation between church and state" as President Thomas Jefferson wrote the Baptists Association of Danbury Connecticut. But, even at that time, the First Amendment wasn't necessarily applicable to states; just the Federal Government. (That would change later via the 14th Amendment and subsequent Supreme Court rulings.) Anyway, the 1st Amendment didn't exist, so, in principle, Pennsylvania, having mostly pacifist Quakers, could have voted to ban guns. This would leave people defenseless and the non-Quakers living in Pennsylvania didn't like that. The 2nd Amendment was an effort to appease those people who had legitimate concerns.
  
  In the modern world, in rural America, the police may take a good long time before they come to your home, so having weapons to defend yourself and your family is important. And, of course, hunting is a cost-effective way of feeding meat to your family. This is really important if you are poor.

It states that ‘a well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.’ In Russia and the Soviet Union after comrade Lenin, they had a Militsiya instead of a police force, but it does pretty much the same. If Militsiya (police) and Militia are the same, then it’s to keep the citizens safe and shit.

What George said also makes sense; I agree with him. Maybe there should be an informal militia, but then again, even bad guys can be in it. What’s evil and what’s good is all subjective.

You aren't permitted by God to kill people. Don't be "that" Christian. You give ALL of us a bad name. The second amendment was enforced so that our citizens had the right to overrule and take over a faulty government attempting to take away our rights and freedom. This does not mean you get to kill off police officers for touching you. This does not mean you get to kill anyone at all. It gives you the right to protect yourself, your home, your kin and your freedom as seen by the state.

My state is a 3rd party state. Meaning if you break in to my home, I have full rights to use whatever force necessary to protect my property and family. It also means that I have the right to use whatever force necessary to protect any individual who is directly put in harms way by another individual. This does not mean I have the right to sit in a window and peg off police officers, while screaming "I'm innocent before God and therefore I am within my right to kill". Stop meshing religion with your ideology on this. This right here is the exact reason why more people absolutely hate Christians. You give all of us a bad name because of your extremist views.

The purpose of the 2nd amendment was purely political. At the time there was two different factions with different ideas for how the country should be structured and the 2nd amendment was written as a compromise to the weaker faction which were against federal control, more specifically things like a centralized military.

As such the 2nd amendment protected their beliefs in the state controlled militias to replace and/or protect themselves from the federal government. In other words, it was a purely political move to create a consensus behind the constitution and did not have this supposed unified vision behind it that Americans love to preach about.

Also the United States revolution didn't just start because of one incident. There were years of abuse, restrictions, and harmful laws against the colonies. The British colonists did use a formal protest system and laws designed to redress the grievances they had. They didn't just get up one morning, pick up signs, and start fighting.

Yes, one purpose of the Second Amendment is to keep the government in fear of the people, not the people in fear of the government.

The United States Constitution 3rd Amendment is just as important for limiting the power of the central government. Just imagine all the money we could save if the 3rd Amendment was repealed.

However, the government doesn't have much of a chance against 250 million Americans that are only armed with rifles, shotguns, and pistols.
