This is not only police and the mayor calling evil good, and vice versa, it's a pathway to following suit with a dangerous precedent. It begins by ignoring the scourge. Then, it makes room for the scourge. Then, it's partially about promoting the scourge. Soon, it will be exclusively about the scourge, and the heresy behind the scourge will want itself protected at all costs. To the point of paying no heed to stopping actual crimes, in favor of punishing only they who don't celebrate the scourge enthusiastically enough!
