What should be done about the unsafe operation of trains in the US?

US Corporations that operate trains are so focused on profits that the trains are operated in an unsafe manner with compromised safety equipment. The operators of a Norfolk Southern train carrying hazardous chemicals near East Palestine, Ohio, earlier this month tried to stop the train after a wheel bearing overheated to a dangerous degree, the National Transportation Safety Board said.

The trackside detectors that finally alerted the train crew of an overheating wheel bearing activated too late and by the time an alarm rang to alert the crew of the danger, the bearing was already so compromised that it failed as the train was still coming to a stop and much of the train derailed. The spacing of "hot-box" detectors and the temperatures at which they trigger alarms are not currently regulated by federal law. Summary of NTSB Report

The train track is another issue - defects in tracks cause derailments. Corporations want to use only automated track inspection (ATI) which identifies less than half of the defects. Unions want to do away with ATI for the most part and use only human inspectors.
