I have nothing against them. Others might have polygamy and proselytisation against them. If they let others live, unlike my folks in the (dis) respect of myself, fine with me. I know a Mormon, who was very nice to me, a fellow vegan going to fruitarianism (maybe She was already), and the most proselytising thing about Her was that She recommended me to read the Book of Mormon. Anyway, many people of other sects proselytise others as well, even other Xtians.

Typically, it stems from the fact that they are really good at getting new members. Preachers that derive their income from the offering plate often feel threatened by this; as most converts are from other Christian denominations. So there has been a smear campaign against them since their founding. It really didn't help matters when they moved to a slave state as abolitionists; and continued to actively push for abolition. Which is what lead to the Missouri-Mormon War and the Extermination Order by then Gov. Boggs. Whereby every Mormon was driven out of the state deprived of much of their property during winter under penalty of death. And subsequently allowing for the legal murder of anyone practicing the Mormon faith in the state until it was rescinded in 1976.

Yeah, everyone wants to talk about polygamy and the Mormon church which occurred from the 1870s to the 1890s. Yet nobody wants to talk about the Extermination Order which was on the books from the 1830s to the 1970s. And the polygamy probably wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for the Extermination Order. As Joseph Smith was arrested in Missouri and killed by a mob. Which led to Brigham Young taking over the church. Who at the time of Smith's death was being quietly investigated by the church for apostasy (specifically preaching that polygamy was good and performing plural marriages). Considering he was the one who instituted the practice 40 years later; it is safe to say had the investigation had time to occur, he would have been ousted and not taken over the church. As he was Smith's right-hand man for much of the formation of the church.

Technically I am RLDS. The church split into 6 different churches with Smith's death. The main group following Brigham Young, which most people know as Mormons, which is the LDS Church. Most people don't want to be associated with that church and don't like the Mormon moniker. However, it refers to the Book of Mormon; which we all consider to be canon. So I think of myself as Mormon in the sense of greater Mormonism and not specifically the Mormon Church.

Having dated a Mormon woman for years and at one point engaged I’ve found that it’s really that it’s like JWs. It’s the religion that is creepy not the people. It’s the devotion and brainwashing that scares me not the people.

Some secular people are threatened by their pure lifestyle. Some fundamentalist Christians have issues with their theology.

I wouldn't have a thing against them. The organization is a positive influence within society. Their individual members can be like any other religious members, being either good or bad.

@HippieVeganJewslim Right, Solomon’s wives led him to idol worship. Which other prophets had multiple wives?

Show me where. About other polygamous prophets and Biblical characters, we have Abraham. Jacob. Moses. David. Pnina’s and Hannah’s husband, I reckon. Muhammad. Yeshua, according to some. There’s a commandment saying a king should not have too many wives (implying that polygamy is kosher). However, the Qur’ān says that if a man fears he would not treat his wives equally, then he should marry just one (monogamy).

@HippieVeganJewslim I don’t believe the Quran. That’s nice if there’s a commandment about having too many wives there but I don’t follow the Quran’s teachings.

@HippieVeganJewslim Strictly going by Mosaic Law does not forbid having more than one wife so you are not going to find that in the Ten Commandments. However, the Ten Commandments also do not forbid drunkenness, incest, or even pedophilia or homosexuality. They are commands elsewhere in scripture, however.

By commandments, I mean ye 613 mitsvoþ. Ye 10 are Ye 10 haDibroþ, or literally ten words. Dunno how it got mistranslated.

Torah, the first five books of the Βiβle, written by Moses, peace and blessings upon Him. The Ten Words (Commandments) were given to us by Moses in Exodus (Šemoþ), the third book.
