I'm pretty sure crime has been lower. Violent crime tripled from the 1960s to the 1990s (I'm finding it tricky to find figures for before 1960), but as people who'd been poisoned with lead in their childhoods died off, it went down again. I'm not sure it's back to earlier levels yet, but then again it's possible that more incidents make it into the statistics these days.

For the most part small towns and suburbs did leave their doors open but more people live in big cities and there's a lot of crime now in small towns due to drugs

I don't remember ever not locking my doors. Even when I was a kid, we locked our doors. I think the fact that you hear about so many bad things that happen, almost as soon as they happen, makes people feel less safe. Back then, when something bad happened, if it didn't happen in your area, you didn't hear about it unless it became huge news.
