Should historic statues be taken down?

Absolutely not. Statues represent historical people and events. If someone sees a statue, it's an opportunity for those who are literate enough to do some research and learn something.
The thing is, every historical figure did good and bad things. Nobody was all good or all bad. It's easy for some whining idiots to condemn everything by looking for the bad. But if that happens, history disappears and we don't learn anything and the past will repeat itself.
No.. The fact that the left wants to do this is reminiscent of 1984.. The obsession with editing history.

Only in America, can you find liberals dumb enough to erect statues of a career criminal that did a home invasion and pointed a loaded gun to a pregnant woman's belly.
And then they tore down statues of Abraham Lincoln who helped free the slaves.
You can't make this shit up.
Per your update... the majority isn't running the show. The tiny minority of woke are in charge.
I was talking to my friend on here, and it stemmed from something I heard on a radio talk show. The host says he still calls flight stewardesses, stewardesses. He said he knows that the woke decided to change it to "flight attendants" but he's not marching to the beat of the woke.
So my friend on here was in the navy, so I asked him what the word "steward" meant to him. He said it was a great term and a term of respect. So why would the woke feel the need to take a very nice word and change it? Because they can. It's about power and control, and I'm not playing their game.
@SnowedIn What say you? Is a steward a bad term?
Ms Wow, if I saw you doing things to help the planet, I would say: Wow, Ms Wow is a great steward of the planet." Would you hate me for that? Would you correct me and tell me you're a planet attendant, and not a steward of the planet?
Take it as a compliment.
@muskratlove... I do not believe that steward is a bad term. Steward means to care for or have entrusted to. If something is entrusted to my care, I don't mind. In fact, I'm honored.
Here's the thing: everyone says that steward is denigrating or implies some sort of drudgery working lifestyle. Guess what: if our names aren't Dimon, Bezos, Musk, Gates, Cook, etc., we're going to be working for someone else. I'd rather be a steward than selling condoms at CVS on West 33rd Street in New York City or walking past the homeless on my way to my job as a server at Cheesecake Factory in Seattle.
@SnowedIn
I would NEVER sell condoms as a condom steward. But if I could be a condom attendant, I might think about it. It does have a nice ring to it.
Very good answer, but don't think it is just the USA. Here in the UK people also protested over that guy and then started pulling down statues of famous people. They even tried to take down some of famous people who had done great for the country and the world.
@DarkLegacy
There are evil forces behind this crap. Don't think for a minute that this wasn't a choreographed thing in the UK. It's the new world order, and they're getting close. Climate change is all coming from the new world order. They fly on private jets, and tell New Yorkers they can't have gas stoves. Stupid people will believe anything that comes out of the talking box.
@muskratlove you are so right, i keep telling people this.
@DarkLegacy
It's all around us, but most people choose not to see it. I love when they send a reporter out to a college campus, and ask them who the president is. Most don't know. And then they asked who the vice president is. One girl thought it was Oprah Winfrey, and another thought it was Michelle Obama. So if these idiots don't even know those two facts, why are they angry at statues? They're not. They are being paid by the dark forces.
Let's make this very clear Abraham Lincoln did not free the slaves in any way that wasn't his plan his plan actually was to remove all blacks from the United states
They're supposed to be reminders of where we were, which is a reflection on who we are now. Like, we should remember who we were then and know just how far we've come, or... we forget it and just repeat history.
... So it makes no sense to just remove them and replace them with some modern art stuff. And, and a side note, I'm noticing this stuff is getting replaced with shit like worshiping George Floyde... I mean really? a dude that has counterfeit money and drugs in his mouth... I mean... are these people even trying to be serious?
I finally agree with something you said. LOL There should NOT be statues of George Floyd, but there shouldn't be statues of George Washington either. Taking down the ones of people who don't deserve the recognition doesn't mean replace it with another who doesn't. The Floyd incident was tragic in many ways, but it doesn't deserve a statue any more than the Titanic does.
@loveslongnails It is my long-held belief that eventually... you'll find common ground with anyone.
Them taking those statues down does sort of make sense, out of some of their listed reasons... but like with most little battles that get won... they start to take it too far. ... It's just a matter of time... they'll knock down a statue of Neil deGrasse Tyson just to put up a giant multi-colored dildo.
The reasons that sort of made me step back and think..."Oh, well maybe they have a point," get replaced with things like a giant multi-colored dildo. When they do stuff like that... They're not helping anyone or their own cause. It's just retardation.
Funny. I still disagree with him. Statues are more than just history, we have books for that. Its a reflection of who we are. For example, which statue is more powerful/important between the 9/11 memorial or some confederate memorial? One is of a single terrorist attack where the other is of a national civil war and all the tragedy that surrounds it.
But...
The 9/11 memorial is a lot more important for us living here today. It is part of our cultural memory, we lived though it and felt its ramifications. The civil war is something that happened generations ago and is not really at the forefront of our mind anymore. Just because there is history behind it, even if it is important history does not mean it deserves to remain in our society in place of new historical statues or more culturally relevant ones. Its childish to think that statues works on a first comes basis.
Its also worth noting that most of the controversial statues replaced in USA today has no historical value. They were not statues erected to commemorate the civil war but rather put up long after during the rise of civil rights as a way to oppress people and remind them of their heritage as slaves. The intentions and placements of these monuments are built on hate and anti-American principles so fuck em with a bulldozer.
Very good answer, what about the other terrible things he did.
@loveslongnails What's wrong with Washington?
@_piotr
*He was the original "Donald Trump", for starters. He told more lies to get where he was than anyone else in his time.
* He singled handedly started the French-Indian War
* He promised men land if they'd join the Continental Army and then didn't deliver it
* He enriched himself as a result of the war, almost doubling the number of slaves he owned.
* He was well-known for abusing and mistreating his slaves
* He was terrible in battles, losing 9 of the 12 he fought in
And my favorite :
* He sent Sullivan to burn EVERY Iroquois Nation village and destroy their crops - EVEN the ones that FOUGHT on the side of the Revolution !!
And this doesn't even include the Whisky Rebellion shit.
Washington was a scumbag loser - which is why he's Trump's favorite President.
@loveslongnails If you had it your way they would truly be few and far between.
There really was not a big appetite to construct confederate monuments after the civil war until the construction could be used by racist politicians and politically motivated individuals. They have virtually zero historical value unless you want to look into the racist history of USA.
@Soteris Would you agree that maybe we should preserve them in a museum or something like that? I mean maybe a future generation will have a change of heart and feel a little different than our current wokesters that think they know how to finally make communism work...😂
I mean... at least sell the shit to some art collector, or would that be too capitalist? 😂
I mean, if you want to. I know a bunch of the confederate monuments that got replaced was moved to confederate burial sites which is technically a better place for them if not for the fact that they had nothing to do with the civil war and all to do with oppressing minorities but whatever, no one cares what you put in confederate burial sites. If you dont want to put the statues there, may I suggest the giant rainbow dildos you were talking about earlier? Would be funny if nothing else.
Not every statue is worth keeping in place. A lot were just erected because some rich guy at the time paid for it. Towns are littered with old statues of people that few locals can actually name or tell of their deeds. Take the statue in the photo, can you name her? Probably not. It's the first black headteacher in wales. Now sure at the moment it means something to the local black folk but in 10 years, 20 years? I'll guarantee 99% won't have a clue who it is. So tear it down and replace it.
Wales, Wales, Wales!! Maybe in 20 years 99% of people won't know where Wales is
Lol i bet barely anyone knows she existed. We know why it was put up and so what, she never did anything that warranted a statue put up for her.
Exactly. A small group of people impose a whopping big statue on everyone else in the middle of the city.
It depends on when they were put up and why.
For example, a statue of Robert E Lee erected during the civil war would have a very different meaning from one put up in the 1950s. Statues of Lenin have been torn down. Nobody in their right mind would want to keep a statue of Adolf or Benito.
What the individual did and stood for should dictate where their effigy is appropriate. It's foolish to say a blanket "yes" to your question as those who don't learn the lessons of history will inevitably repeat it.
@WowwGirl this is a great question.
Leave the statues up. If they need context, add context. If they need explanation, do so. If they need a docent or an audio guide, do that. But if everything old must come down, then all of society must come down. Removing and erasing and editing and revising and painting over is not the solution.
No, they shouldn't. History regardless if it is good or bad is something that should not be erased and instead serve as teaching points to develop as a society.
Those that try to erase it are the dangerous ones. We need reminders and staples of culture to remain in the world not erased and forgotten because of some dumb shits expressing guilt over shit they had no personal involvement in. This is why I believe SJWs are fucking retards.
The statues represent the country’s history, no matter how complicated. Taking them down is to censor, whitewash, and potentially forget that history.
Of the calls to take down Confederate monuments, President Donald Trump stated, “This cruel campaign of censorship and exclusion violates everything we hold dear as Americans. They want to demolish our heritage so they can impose a new oppressive regime in its place.” [9] Trump argued the plight to save the statues “is a battle to save the Heritage, History, and Greatness of our Country!” [34]..
Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.
Every statue that is put up one day has to be taken down another, that is just a fact of life. If they hold historical value they can be relocated somewhere more appropriate later such as into museums or whatever but there will always be a need to replace statues as society progresses because its not just about history but about what is relevant to our current society which means things become obsolete as new events and people takes precedent.
if it makes the crime go down and they commit to getting jobs, yes. If that doesn't change the statues need to go back up. they also have to cut their grass and not roll down the street with their bass blasting while the people who have to get up for work need to be asleep.
Yes, they will all be destroyed.
Everywhere you see God, on any of the work in DC. God too will be defaced or concrete filled on all the monuments or architectural creations in this culture.
Hell no, that's our history
Its the elite that wants to erase history, so history repeats itself.
The worst is coming
No, the value of history is reference. That we try to hide our mistakes is a form of denialism and serves to set back progress.
yeah tear them all down and replace them all with a statue of Joe Biden kissing Xi Jing Ping's shoes or a statue of Harry Styles in a dress
No they should not. People literally want to take down the statues of every person who has done great things not just for the UK but the world also.
Some should, yes. Some are tributes to some really shitty individuals who were glorified throughout history when they shouldn't have been.
Not all history should be celebrated. Remembered, yes, but not celebrated.
No, they should not be taken down or destroyed. They are part of our history, good or bad.
Why would a country willingly destroy its heritage and history over some hurt feelings?
Let me introduce you to the UK. It is happening here thanks to socialist jobsworths.
No, they shouldn't be taken down.
No!
Erasing history is part of the Communist agenda.
NO! otherwise people will forget and history will repeat itself
Some statutes exceed their acceptable palatable lifetime. Those should be moved to less public spaces, perhaps to a museum
No, they were put up there for some reason that was important at the time.
Depends on who. Hitler, Mao, Stalin, Lenin etc definitely destroy them
Absolutely not!!
No, it's getting ridiculous.
no leave them there
That depends on who they are representing
Depends on what they represent
absolutely not
Nope
