In the 17th century, Louis XIV was at the head of the most powerful army. Aware that soldiers are the primary guarantors of French greatness, the Sun King decides to build a building to accommodate those who have served the royal army. The city of Invalides opened to veterans in 1674. At the same time hospice, barracks, convent, hospital and factory, the Hotel is a real city regulated according to a system that is both military and religious. More than 4,000 residents then lived within the walls of the site.
Even today, the Hotel continues its initial vocation by housing the National Institution of Invalides. Upon entering the main courtyard, visitors admire a collection of artillery retracing 200 years of history, then direct their steps towards the entrance of the various museums, including the Musée de l'Armée, which presents one of the most exceptional collections of military history in Europe, and even the world.
