Spectacularly gothic! I was curious as to how far back it would go and was surprised to see Charles Martel there. That period is confusing to me and i had thought he was a duke not a king.

It might be trivial of me but I was very impressed by the very long candles.

Yes he reigned lol. But sometimes the kings of France gave some really special people the honor of being buried next to them.

Obviously the gothic style is nice. I think the exterior is more impressive than the interior since the interior space looks very limited/restricted. Any random church in Rome is more impressive on the interior. I heard this church is the first gothic church? They did a great job if it was essentially the first of it's kind. Notre Dame de Paris looks much better on the inside to me.

The most impressive thing is how they built such a large church without using iron or steel and metal scaffolding. I know in some cases it took years to hundreds of years build a church. Just getting the massive block to the top is mind blowing. Hats off to those builders!

I recently read "A History of Gaul: Celtic, Roman and Frankish Rule" by Fr. Funk-Brentano. It ended with the death of Louis V in 987. I bought it years ago because I'm interested in Celtic history. There is a second book that continues the history, but I don't have a copy.
Anyway, it was fascinating to read about the Merovingians and Carlovingians, which I had been aware of, but not in detail.
