Obviously there’s a level of self-defense everyone should be afforded, but I don’t believe in this whole concept of basically just assuming the worst case scenario in any sort of confrontation, the whole “well, they MIGHT have a weapon.
No one is entitled to being alive, I think that’s the first mistake we make, we overvalue our own lives. We have no “right” to see the next day. We are all just competing organisms in the competitive environment that is nature. Don’t humanize us, we aren’t worthy of that, lmao, our species is trash. I don’t say that to be misanthropic, but rather to shake everyone by the shoulders and remind them that none of us matter a lick, that importance only exists in our own minds, and perhaps the minds of our loved ones.
I don’t have time to expound on this whole topic the way I want to, I’m leaving a lot out, but I wanted to mention that Ohio has “Stand your ground” laws. Ma’Khia Bryant was engaged in defending herself using lethal force (knife) a couple years ago, against multiple assailants who showed up to the property she lived on and instigated a physical altercation with her. A cop showed up and pretty much immediately shot her dead. And I don’t want to hear “she should’ve relented when the cop announced himself”, I know I personally black out during a fight and don’t register any outside noise, so you have to account for that. But the cop walked, no charges. It seems that “Stand Your Ground” doesn’t apply for Black teenage girls, but it DOES apply if you want to excuse shooting a Black teenage boy (Trayvon Martin).
I just don’t understand why the people who constantly yell that “facts don’t care about your feelings” all of a sudden think “feeling” threatened is perfectly justifiable reasoning to try to kill somebody. I don’t care how you “felt”, bro, lmao
Fair enough, we all have our own opinion. Definitely with you on the basic premise of escalation though.
"Stand Your Ground" *only* applies to self-defense. It does not give someone carte blanche to go on the offense. These laws were put into place because politicians in many areas were trying to enact laws that would FORCE someone being attacked to retreat - and in a couple of states, those laws still exist, and in a few, you must even retreat FROM YOUR OWN HOME. That is disgusting, wrong, and not constitutional, but until a case is heard in the Supreme Court, those laws won't be overturned.
The law also requires that the person attacking you represents a credible threat of death or severe injury. You can't shoot or stab or bludgeon someone who is just shouting at you, or who is behind a fence without a weapon, or who otherwise doesn't pose a real and present threat of serious violence. If you attack in that situation, YOU will be arrested and charged.
The truth is that these laws have REDUCED serious violence - states with these laws have lower rates of assaults and murders/attempted murders.
I have zero sympathy for people who attack other people who get hurt as a result. Criminals who go unchecked escalate their crimes, and makes society worse and more dangerous for everyone.
No, it isn't.
If you have a problem with this law, you are, in my mind, prioritizing the criminals over their victims. Want to avoid being hurt under this law? It's very simple: don't attack someone or threaten to attack them. This law cannot come into effect unless you do that.
And if you DO attack someone, in my opinion, they have every right to defend themselves without being forced to retreat. Again, it is incredibly easy to avoid problems: don't attack people.
So... that's why Kyle retreated, multiple times, right? One of the guys he shot, Gaige Grosskreutz, admitted on the stand that he intended to murder Kyle and that Kyle had his gun on him, and when Gaige put his gun down, so did Kyle, and only re-engaged after Gaige did. The entire reason Kyle wasn't convicted is that it was clearly proven - even by the words of one of his own attackers - that his actions were all in self-defense.
The same was true in the Zimmerman case.
In both of those cases, there was a HUGE desire to convict these men - but they proved self-defense. That's exactly how the law is SUPPOSED to work. Neither of these men attacked anyone - both were themselves attacked. All of their victims initiated deadly violence against them.
If someone attacked you with deadly violence, do you think that you should have to retreat - even if they're shooting you? Or do you think you should be able to fight back and defend your life? You are advocating having to retreat - so is your life worth less than a criminal?
"Does Stand-Your-Ground Law equal machismo bullsh*t?"
Why? Stand the ground applies is when the shooter is DEFENDING themselves due to FEAR of their life.
People don't know if the burglar has a gun in their pocket. A knife to slit their throat. A screwdriver to jam into their eye and rattle their brains around. Hell you don't even need a weapon to kill someone... choking, wrap hands around a person's throat & squeeze.
.
Or would you prefer that criminals are allowed to run around like a pack of wild dogs burgalizing, assaulting, raping, etc. home owners and get away scot free?
If a burglar kills home owners it's not like there'd be anyone to call the police for hours potentially DAYS later and by then the criminals are the long gone. Which means they can keep burgalizing & killing, keep burgalizing & killing, keep burgalizing & killing.
You'd be okay with this?
Nope they do not. There have been cases of people who were attacked by a criminal and shot them in self defense but then later on got convicted of killing them, because they were required to flee.
They were required to turn their back on someone who would of KILLED THEM had they done so.
Stand your ground merely says, you do not have to attempt to flee to save the life of a criminal.
Criminals forfeit their life soon as they choose to do the crime. They should all be blood eagled in my book.
To be a bit more compassionate, they can be given a knife and allowed to end their own life, OR be blood eagled as a humane way of dying. This way they get to decide.
I have zero care for criminals, I hate people who care more about criminals than victims.
100% of concern should go the victims and 0% should go to the criminal.
No one knows a 100% but one can't take that chance, because then your dead. I personally assume, if they are willing to break the law to attack me, rob me, etc... then I have no way to know their limits and will assume they have none.
Absolutely, as it would be stupid to take a chance as now your dead. Let the criminals be the dead ones instead.
Not true, if someone has a knife or weapon, I'm scared and fear for my life, thus the law does agree. Many people have been in that exact situation without being arrested, charged or anything.
A huge man could be threatening to rape me and I could shoot him and because I was in fear for my life it would be fine and self defense under stand your ground laws. I've already done that.

I have no idea what you are talking about. If you are attacked, you are in no position to compromise or “back down.” That’s not relevant to a question of self-defense, at all. If I display a deadly weapon and the attacker is not deterred by that, do you think that I can say, “you know what? let’s just negotiate a compromise?”
There is nothing macho about defending yourself. Likewise, flight is not a compromise. There is a time to run, certainly, but there is also a time to fight.
And machismo has nothing to do with it.
I mean, taking a life is a grave thing. And it seems some people won't set aside their egos to prevent that. Like they self righteously want to prove their point, even though it's over a triviality. Is having your wallet stolen worth someone dying over? These are material objects. And as scummy as these people are in the moment, they still have a family.
However, I don't want to be black and white about this. Obviously, these people shouldn't be engaging in these crimes or on your property.
Though there are differences between self-defense, and some kind of self-righteous retribution - that you crossed someone's ego. It seems when you hear Americans talk about this they often fall into the latter camp.
@APrettyLittleLady87 Educate yourself: Even in Self-Defense classes, we do not use "Lethal Force" unless it is totally unavoidable and your own LIFE or the LIFE of a family member is in immediate jeopardy. If you can defeat your attacker without "Lethal Force" you are morally and legally obligated to do that instead.
@Wade12345 "your own LIFE or the LIFE of a family member is in immediate jeopardy"
Indeed EDUCATE yourself. That is the STANDARD for Stand Your Ground. Stand the Ground DOES NOT allow you to just randomly shoot people.
I think a low life taking my purse should die. Then they will never steal again. I don't care about a single criminal or their family.
Material possessions are mine and if they are taken, they are gone forever and can never be replaced. Even if the criminal is caught the justice system won't force them to replace what they stole.
I have zero trust in the system in getting my stuff back. If we kill more criminals, there will be less criminals out there.
I fucking hate people who care more about criminals than the victims.
@Wade12345 "A thief who's life is spared may learn to repent. / A thief who is dead doesn't learn anything."
First off, stand the ground is only in defense of life with a secondary very vague concept you can use it for property. So if a thief is attacking someone else to get away with their crime then why does the victim not have a right to defend themselves?
Most thief's don't repent. It's why in Islamic countries it is such it's expected of the property owner or the police, either or, to cut off a thief's hands.
It is such that in the Bible says a thief is to pay back 3 to 7 TIMES, depends on what verse, what stole even if means selling everything within their house and their house itself to repay for their sin.
If thiefs learnt they wouldn't be career criminals to the point the term kleptomania was coined.
@APrettyLittleLady87 With property, a thief may be attempting strictly to steal property and not intending to harm someone but if the person who owns it fights back, refuses to give it. It can change to a self defense case. As the thief may escalate in violence to get the property/item.
It may also change to a murder case if the victim gets killed. There are many murderers in prison who only wanted to steal something, armed robbery, etc... that someone fought back and was killed.
@Wade12345 A thief that is dead, will never learn to become a better thief or learn to advance to escalating to more serious crimes. I'm okay with a dead thief not becoming a better criminal.
@Levin
Your logic is flawed. Taking a life is a grave thing. You are right. So is threat or use of violence in a criminal manner. That is also a grave thing. You seem more concerned about the well being of thugs than those who are their would be victims.
Is having your wallet stollen worth someone dying over? When violence or death threats are used it’s no longer about the wallet, it’s now about defending your life from a violent attack for not capitulating. In such a case you’re now defending your life not your wallet.
Actively defending yourself is not about “self righteous retribution” it’s about defending yourself from a sustained attack in which lethal force must be used to preserve your life or those of other victims. The thief doesn’t value their own life.
No one should be forced to capitulate with threats of violence or actual violence. No negation with terrorists. Here you want to blame the one defending themselves. It’s just as easy to look at it differently and say: “had they not attacked me, I would not have killed them.” It is the criminal in these situations who puts themselves in that place. Everyone wants to blame the shooter or the police, but no one wants to ask: “how did the police become involved with this person, or how did this criminal end up being killed.” There are consequences for our actions. The responsibility is always placed on the one defending themselves or the police, no one asks what was it the criminal was doing that got the events in motion.
@wade and Levin
I’d be inclined to agree that no property is worth a life. We don’t execute thieves, we mail them. Surely a thief who is caught must be made to pay restitution and pay for the crime.
However…..
Do most criminals say: “we’re only here to steal?” No. They simply attack or break and enter in which case we can presume our lives are in danger. We don’t know their intent. Since they don’t announce it we can assume the person beating us to take our purse or wallet or the person breaking into our house is there for even more nefarious purposes. We can assume our lives are in jeopardy. Criminals don’t typically announce their intent. They seek to be fast and conceal their crime as best as possible. Therefore if they end up dead, that’s their fault and no one should feel sorry for them.
*jail them not mail them.
@APrettyLittleLady87 @aerissa_jade Are you guys Christians? You don't seem very forgiving.
Also, I don't get why Americans have such an obsession with this. When I go to sleep, I'm not frantically worrying about home invasions, violent criminals etc. Alright, I'm quite fortunate to live in a reasonable area. There is something wrong with the society in which this is taking place. One act of sickness, begets another act of sickness. If you shoot someone for taking your wallet, and it's not a genuine self defense situation, you're not cleansing society, you're imprinting an act of sickness, an act of sickness that gets perpetuated and multiplied in a round about way.
Creaming your pants to be like fuckin Saudi or some other Islamic cesspit hardly seems like a good argument, either.
@Wade12345 Yes, I sympathise with what you are saying.
@Exterminatore I'm not concerned about the lives of criminals beyond others. This is just black and white thinking. People who commit those crimes are scumbags. I still believe in proportionality though.
No, it does not. If I am just minding my own business and a criminal starts being an idiot, why should I have to stop what I am doing for them? Why should I be forced to back down to spare his life when he introduced deadly force first? How many people will he hurt if I let him get away? Criminals should NEVER get to have their way at the expense of law-abiding citizens.
If I lose and die in the conflict, at least it is my choice and the criminal WILL have a wound that will hamper any future criminal activity until he heals and there will be evidence as a result of our conflict.. If I win, I deny the criminal whatever he was doing and he is no longer a threat.
At the end of the day, stand your ground is about having the freedom to choose your response to a situation vs. dealing with some "duty to retreat" bullshit that is not realistic and only allows one option and does not allow concessions for if retreat is not available.
Why do you have to retreat? Isn't that just cowardism bullshit? A "stand your ground" law does not force you to shoot your attacker, however a "duty to retreat" law forces you to run from your attacker. The law should not outright dictate your response to a threat. That should be up to you, as the one being threatened and the one who's life is potentially in danger. At least "stand your ground" laws give you options. You can retreat or confront. "Duty to retreat" laws don't.
No, that isn't what laws do. Laws punish crime. The law abiding follow the law because they want to. You should not put unnecessary burdens on the law abiding. And you have it backwards. The crime being committed is the person attacking someone who just wanted to be left alone. Your law didn't dictate that person's behavior. They are breaking the law regardless. The person being attacked just wants to survive. That isn't a crime and you shouldn't make it one.
California has a stand your ground law but ours is only for physical altercations therefore I can legally beat the dog shit out of someone if they try me I don't have to walk off & I wouldn't.
In FL, I never agreed with the Trayvon Martin death as a unarmed kid was just walking to the store & back. I fail to see a threat of a unarmed child with no intentions on robbing anyone.
Just cause you feel threatened doesn't mean you can be a Maniac, 5150s should not have weapons period.
Lol I already told you I am independent, I just lean more to the right due to the craziness of the left over the years and they just keep getting worse. But being crazy is being crazy and feeling a threat is not an excuse to kill someone cause you "felt" something. We all feel things doesn't mean I can do it. If you really felt danger was coming your way, then you should brandish that shit. That scares anyone away. But confronting someone cause tour feel a way and then killing them is crazy af and that man is mentally unstable.
I prefer Idaho's laws. If someone breaks in your house, even unarmed, you get to kill them. If they try to steal your car, you get to kill them. Just leave people alone and don't be a criminal and there is no problem. Mess with the wrong people and die. As it should be.
You're not allowed to advance on people but the idea is you're allowed to stand up to precisely the machismo sort of person who is trying to advance on you. That's the theory, anyway. In practice it seems to be mostly interpreted as legalizing letting someone's feelings determine whether or not someone else lives or dies.
It's ridiculous that it had to be a law passed in the first place. You shouldn't have to retreat or back down in the event that someone happens to attack you. The very idea that you have to back down in order to ensure a criminal's safety is ensured is ludicrous. Don't do the crime if you're not prepared for the consequences.
No we shouldn't have gun in hands of civilians. The only place you need to hold your ground is in your home. So we need to remove fatalities in crimes. We must assume killing is bad and whoever does it should be punished unless there is evidence to the contrary. Since you can't question the dead.
Seriously? If someone is breaking into your house or has broken into your house, you should be able to defend yourself.
@Adam1978 - Anyone can break a window. Unless you have bars, someone is coming in. Strong door? Easily broken into... using an old truck & ram it.
The thing is, is people don't know if the burglar has a gun in their pocket. A knife to slit their throat. A screwdriver to jam into their eye and rattle their brains around. Hell you don't even need a weapon to kill someone... choking, wrap hands around a person's throat & squeeze.
You can always create a scenery where you are helpless with or without gun. It's not a valid argument. I can flatten your building if I got a tank. Doesn't mean you shouldn't get a house. Because the number of houses flatten by tanks are basically none existing in none war zones. If someone smashes into a house it's usually bad driving, not burglary. Because those are aimed towards shops. It's not worth wrecking a car for the possessions you can steal in a regular house. Besides the house is ensured. So if some did that I could get the full value back. No need to engage a hopeless situation.
You have two choices , kill they SOB and live , then go to prison if you are a white male the rest of your life or not kill the SOB and he kills you. Pretty much your two choices if you live in Democratically ran city. Even if SOB breaks in your home and has a weapon.
it is 888 to you. Twitter.
If a person breaks in your home , there ain't time for him to answer a questionnaire. In the dark you don;t know whether he has a gun or knife. The truth is that they shouldn't be there uninvited , so may they land where the bullets send them.
If you enter my property unannounced, and through a locked door, window or gate, in the middle of the nite, you will hear one shot, a groan, then a thud of your body hitting the ground. There will be no discussion, no debate, no second chances. Another words, if take a chance of not making it home. Possession is 9/10th of the law they say.. Keep your mitts and your body away from something that's not yours and worked hard for.. that includes catalytic converters or a power tool.
If you initiate aggression, that's not standing your ground. If someone comes at me with a knife, or a bat, or a weapon, then I can pull out my gun and defend myself. That's what it means to me. I'd probably not shoot to kill if I could avoid it.
I think that you should be saying that a Victim doesn’t have to retreat and not using the term Shooter doesn’t have to retreat.
Even though the Victim will probably be one of or the shooter.
In unconfirmed studies. More violence is stopping by the presence of a firearm without a shot being fired. Then someone actually pulling the trigger! So yes! There are compromises and people walking ( running) away.
Well, it stems from the Castle Doctrine. Think about it like this- if someone breaks into your house to rape your wife, should you be required to run away and let her get raped rather than shooting the rapist who's already in your house?
Well, you might be able to if 1) you aren't the aggressor (which, IIRC, is a precept behind Stand Your Ground) and 2) your life is in danger as a result of the fistfight. That means an aggressor can't claim that you couldn't legally use a firearm to defend yourself if your attacker is beating the shit out of you to the point that your life is in danger, for example, stomping your head with boots or slamming your head into concrete sidewalks. Those elements are also present in traditional self-defense.
So you can escalate (and certainly the examples I gave show that the attacker themselves escalated). Or are you going to claim that someone has the right to attack another person and beat them to a bloody pulp or whenever they feel like stopping?
No someone break into my house ima shoot them. What am I supposed to do let them rob me? Rape my wife? Kidnap my kids I know in Oregon that’s exactly what you’re supposed to do or wait until Rober shoot first. By that time I could be dead
I have a right to defend myself and I don't have to flee from somebody if they are attacking me. I am allowed to respond in kind with as much force as necessary.
That is a natural right, I don't need the government to give me that right.
Not really. But it's abused that way.
The most dangerous animal in America is other Americans. So stands to reason, you shoot them first, reason later.
Imagine being angry that people are allowed to defend themselves.
Self defense is a right and yes it requires balls not to role over and concede to the violent leftists.
@Wade12345 People don't know if the burglar has a gun in their pocket. A knife to slit their throat. A screwdriver to jam into their eye and rattle their brains around. Hell you don't even need a weapon to kill someone... choking, wrap hands around a person's throat & squeeze.
@APrettyLittleLady87 Shouldn't be shooting someone if you haven't even confirmed they were armed. If you need to use a weapon against an unarmed man, buy a pair of Sai, they are terrific.
@Wade12345 Sai? That's a damn good way of getting your throat slit open by someone that knows what they're doing and doesn't just watch Naruto.
@Wade12345 Never mind WHY would a law obeying citizen be breaking into someone else's property? So logically if someone is breaking into your property - which is paramount to the stand the ground regulations - they're armed.
@APrettyLittleLady87 Sai are a perfect counter to knives. They counter every major melee weapon, including swords and Pike. I do know what I'm doing. I'm an expert martial artist.
@APrettyLittleLady87 You cannot assume a person is armed just because they are breaking into your house.
@Wade12345 Let me ask you something. WHAT right does a person have to break into someone else's property? Not even religious books such as the Bible says its permissible.
WHAT right does a person have to ruin the safety & security that someone has in their own property? Not even religious books such as the Bible says its permissible.
Even in religious books such as the Bible says that it is permissible to rebuke the trespasser be it a physical or verbal trespass and that the trespasser is committing a sin.
@APrettyLittleLady87 I never said to let the person steal your stuff. As you recall, I told you it's not okay to kill someone before you've even confirmed they are armed. There's a difference between stealing and killing. Killing a thief makes you a murderer. The penalty in the Bible for theft is 4 times the damages, not a death penality, so no, you do not have a "God given right" to kill a thief just because they are in your house, UNLESS they are armed and threatening you or your family with the weapon. That matters: Confirmed armed and threatening your life and limb vs not confirmed armed.
@Wade12345 "your own LIFE or the LIFE of a family member is in immediate jeopardy"
Indeed EDUCATE yourself. That is the STANDARD for Stand Your Ground. Stand the Ground DOES NOT allow you to just randomly shoot people.
i feel way too much around the legality of shooting someone is focused on "how the shooter felt when he shot". that really shouldn't matter at all. cause nobody can deny or verify how someone felt.
That is good. Don't let someone take what is yours and eliminate undesirables that are harmful to society.
Problem with running away or walking away trying to get away at all is that you're very likely to get shot in the back. You probably are better off shooting the person that's after you and that's what the stand your ground law is all about
if you want to be a dumbass and go up to someone with a gun then R. I. P. that's your own damn fault
I’ll never understand why you have such a raging hard on to keep women and disabled people unarmed.
Nevermind. I think I’m starting to get the picture. Sicko.
when you are backed into a corner and have no other choice but them or me, it will be them every time.
No. First of all, it requires an imminent threat of harm. Second, in the moment as the intended victim it is not always easy to see if a safe retreat is possible.
Guns are the greatest equalizer ever made. No matter your sex, or color, or size, if you get shot you die. And everyone can hold a gun.
What is it with leftists and their desire for people to be disarmed and defenseless?
No, but when you face someone you have to assume that he is armed and one of you will be dead.
No. Should we allow the violent criminal to dictate what we do? Should we be required to run from them? That just gives them more power.
How about don't break into people's homes and don't try to rob people. If you do, you risk being sent out on a platter.
Threaten to rape an armed female and find out!!!
Using your firearm should be the last thing if other options don't work when seriously threatened.
just like all laws there are loopholes that can be used by the wrong people. one example is kyle rittenhouse.
IF you don't fuck around you won't have a chance to find out.
What do you want to do? Call the police and hope you're still alive when they arrive?
Don't get married and have kids.
Stand your ground = man down
Those pics cheered me up.
Ask him :)
Nah--it seems pretty reasonable to me.
Omg. No has the time or crayons for you.
