No, it's not a charitable donation. It pays a large part of the server's salary. It's just a different way of paying for your meal and having the restaurant cover their labor costs. If servers were paid much more, the price of whatever you order would be raised 15-20% or the restaurant would institute a mandatory service charge as a few have started to do.. A diner is going to pay it either way assuming decent service unless they're a selfish prick who stiffs servers cause they can.
