Have you ever refused to tip someone doing a service for you? if so why?

I would only refuse if the service was extremely bad and directly their fault, not something beyond their control.
Like at a restaurant, if I watch servers ignore me and chat with their friends, and forget to bring stuff. Yet if they are running their ass off and have too many tables, I don't blame them for that, or if the cooks are slow.
I don't ask for managers, cause then I have to wait another 20 minutes to have one come talk to me, to offer new food that I then have to wait another 20 minutes to get, that potentially someone spit in cause now I'm a complainer.
I view TIP as 'To Insure Prompt' Service and I say this as someone who waited tables for a time.
Thanks for MHO
Yes, I rarely refuse to tip someone, but I had to do it recently while out eating breakfast with my boyfriend. We sat there waiting for our food for about 45 minutes when we saw it ready to be served (on the platters near the kitchen - Not sure what to call it). Our server was laughing with her friend and came by only one time to ask us what we were ordering. We ended up telling her that our food was clearly ready because we were the only ones in the café…

I always tip. I always thought it was kind of douchey and cheap to sliding-scale it and basically judge their performance. A lot of people on salary or traditional hourly wages suck at their jobs too, and they get the entirety of their money, lmao. I don’t have enough confidence in the decency of the average person to be honest about judgements that directly relate to their spending.
People are weird about money, and some people seem to take offense to the idea of expected tipping. I don’t think they realize that, in the case of a restaurant, if tipping stopped, your meal will just become more expensive. You think the restaurant is just going to eat the additional 15-20% increase in payroll? Just lmfao, obviously you wouldn't know business owners if you think that’s happening in a million years. I’ve managed a restaurant, they simply don’t have the leeway in their margins for that. Now your $10 meal is $15, your $2 soda is $4, and you can forget about free refills lmao. If your waiter sucks, that’s between them and their employer, there’s not a fuck of a lot you can do as a customer. You can complain, but 9 times out of 10, we’re laughing at you and rolling our eyes as soon as you leave, you won’t affect anything, and the manager isn’t going to create a problem for themself and fire someone and be shorthanded the next two weeks.
I’ve overheard tables literally holding debates over how much to tip, not even in cases of egregiously poor service, just this weird, +1 for this, -2 for that thing, and it’s honestly so fucking cringe lmao. Or they base the waiter’s tip on the overall experience, which simply isn’t fair. “The service was good, but we had to wait 20 minutes for a table and my burger was overdone, so I’m only leaving 10%.” Bro…. WHAT?🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️ It all boils down to a general tenor of “how little can I reasonably get away with tipping without being indefensibly called an asshole?”, and that just sucks. Also, these big debates would end up being “ok…. so instead of $9, we’ll leave $7!” Holy shit, man…. holy shit. Like if that two dollars makes or breaks you, you need both a better job and a better life, lmfao.
I went to a restaurant in Los Angeles that had a sign that said chips are mandatory of 40% of seal purchase and I saw a couple get arrested for not tipping and because they called the police and had them charged with not paying the mandatory gratuity I told him I'm not paying either and if you arrest me I'll have you thrown in jail for harassment and extortion because the gratuity is my choice and the day you try and take that choice for me is the day you stop being a police officer. I have a tendency to piss cops off a lot that way because they don't like being told what the law is but when they know you're right there's now a lot they can do other than let it go if the alternative is possibility of losing their jobs and maybe the freedom the other couple they didn't seem to understand this and they went to jail because they didn't seem to realize that there was no law requiring gratuities to be paid if there were then it would be called protection money oh yeah it is cut protection money but it's not legal and thugs that lean on you to get that money are not legal either. My mom always says that someone gives you good service you should tip them well and I agree but I also believe that someone gives you the attitude then they shouldn't get paid at all let alone get paid to gratuity because I'm not going to reward someone for giving me grief and say please may I have more?
I can't stomach not tipping. I was a server for 20 years. You have bad nights. Make mistakes. It's better now but the way it was for many years was that tipped employees don't have to be paid minimum wage. Up until a few years ago in some states. You got paid $2.13 an hour. Then you claim your tips. Taxes eat up your hourly. So you get a check every two weeks for $0.00 dollars. Now even if you get minimum wage you don't have guaranteed pay like the rest of the business world. How would you like to go to work and have your boss say-- It's slow, we are not going to pay you for working today. Tipped employees only make what you give them. If you have a problem with an employee in any other business you can't just decide not to pay for the new TV in your living room!
Here's what you do:
Let's use a waiter for example.
Pay the tab and give him his 20%.(you don't take food out of a person's mouth just because he forgot to order your dessert).
Then you pull the waiter aside and say, "I gave you 20%, but I just need you to know that the service was disappointing. There may be a reason I'm not aware of, but I just wanted to give my opinion in a constructive way so you can use it to improve things.". Something like that.
Because not tipping doesn't make a point.
They don't learn anything from that. It basically serves no purpose unless that $17.00 tip would put you in financial ruin. They may not have any idea why you didn't tip. Isn't it better to point out the issue so they can learn from it and still give the guy gas money to get home. You're not a monster
No. I’ve had bad service but I still left a small tip. I’m not sure why I did. I guess because I’ve worked as a waitress before and it was miserable. And because you never know what another person is dealing with.
Maybe they’re new and learning. As long as they weren’t blatantly an asshole, I’ll probably always leave a tip.
I never promised a tip so need to refuse something i never promised in the first place. If they dont already include the tip in the check then they’re not guaranteed one
some of these workers depend on tips. im sure you knew that
Yea and thats on them for choosing that job. They couldve chosen a grocery store or something
gosh you say some of the dumbest and coldest shit on here sometimes...
I dont think its dumb. But yea it is quite cold and honest. Thank you. Come again.
some people have very little choice for where to work
Yea i used to be one of em. But i refused to choose something that wasn't guaranteed pay. If i wanted to take a gamble, i’d go to the casino.
I would like to state for the record that if @DizzyDesii is doing this in Europe, it is perfectly normal.
@Mangospacho im American. And im not shamed of my stance.
@Mangospacho how much are servers usually paid in your country?
Oh it’s up to you whether or not you want to tip.
@Still-alive I’m in the US too but, typically, when you have European diners visiting the US who don’t know the tipping system, they assume the tip is already included so they don’t leave anything additional.
@Mangospacho which is understandable.
i tip very rarely and thats usually If the service was really good or if the server was hot. But the majority are not nice people and if i only brought exact change, i dont tip. I dont feel bad about it. Plus i usually do takeout 75% of the time and dont even eat inside restaurants
Tipping on takeout is completely optional, I agree.
too bad she doesn't just do takeout all the time
@Still-alive If she’s only dining occasionally at one specific restaurant and tipping zero, then nothing will happen but if she’s at the same place dining and stiffing the server, then her food is taking a “detour” before it arrives at her table.
@Mangospacho yup
Yes an instacart shopper. Someone once felt substituting chocolate milk for regular milk in my grocery delivery was acceptable. I thought it was a funny mistake. Then it happened again. That time I was pissed. Because it was an apparent purposeful screw up of my order. I went to the store, right away, and there was a whole bunch of the milk I wanted in stock.
I cancelled the tip. Then called customer service to complain and made sure they wouldn’t match me with that shopper again.
No if I get bad service I just think they are having a bad day so I tip still to make them happier
i accept your tip ;)
Haha did you give me bad service?
I might have, i will rectify that for you though ;)
Yes, I have. And therein lies the beauty of the tipping system. It takes a percentage of what we would be required to pay if there were no tipping and gives the customer a choice about whether to pay it based on whether the server has earned it. We can choose to reward good service and not reward poor service. Without tipping, the server would get that money whether they deserve it or not.
I don’t tip washroom attendants. Otherwise no I’ve never refused to tip where it’s customary, and I always tip with cash.
cool *puts out my hand* :D
I’ve gone with my dad on pheasant and chukkar hunts and made good money in tips as a kid for being a bird bag girl, bird cleaner, and for cleaning shotguns. Especially for cleaning shotguns when the drinking starts. Even visiting Europeans are generous when it comes to paying for a good shotgun cleaning so it doesn’t cut into beer time.
oh thats cool. clean my 'shotgun?' lols
some can shoot double loads too ;)
The waitress at Red Robin that refused to bring my kid a new burger even though there was an eyelash in hers. Didn’t get a tip and I reported her weird ass.
when I was bartending my own friend tipped me 5 cents lmfao
yes... all those that insist I should tip them for a service they provided, but I never asked for and surely didn't need... lol
One time I rented a hooker. She went into my bathroom and pulled an upper decker on me. I found out about it rather quickly. She didn't get a tip for her behavior.
I should've refused to tip the driver who let my sweet tea tip over. 😑
how'd that happen? o. O
It takes truly trash service to not leave a tip. I'll reach through the kitchen doors to tip the cooks bypassing the serving staff. Just as an example.
No. I've had sisters that were servers so I always tip. But if the service is that bad you're not likely to get more than 20% from me. And if the service is that bad I probably would think twice before going back.
I don't give tips. It's not common where I live, besides people are usually rude here and their services are crappy.
I once left a small tip cause I could not afford a big one and I felt bad cause the service was amazing
Yeah always optional here and rarely done.
It took me a while to get used to the fact that you tip every bloody person when I lived over there lol
Yes. Once when I ordered food on ubereats. The guy came with the completely wrong order and when I tried to tell him he drove off after pretending he couldn't hear me
When I get really bad service, I tip one red cent! It shows you did not forget, and you felt the service was that bad!
We don't tip our servers in Denmark, their salary is enough.
Also it’s cruel to make them fall over
There service was so bad I didn't want to leave a tip. I left nickel on the table just so they would know I hadn't forgot.
exactly what i did once!
People I was with did similar. I could never bring myself to do something like that myself, but it was earned.
Sometimes when i order food delivery and if i don't have any cash on me, then unfortunately the delivery rider goes without a tip. I normally tip in restaurants, unless there are service charges. Barbers too. And i am not American.
Yeah, one guy use to deliver to us for take out
would make a remark that I broke the piggy bank
cause my tip would be in change
Yes a few times. I had horrible service a few times from a few waiters/waitresses. And not because they were new or anything like that but because they had an attitude along with poor service.
If I leave a tip it depends on the quality of service and their attitude. I tip well for quality service and a pleasant attitude. If the service stinks they get nothing
Tipping isn't a thing here so I guess you could say I refuse all the time.
Refusing to tip would indicate the person doing the service is demanding a tip. Surely that's justification in itself not to tip.
Hehe yeahhhh thats shitty
Once. Worst service of whole life. You could tell the rest of the staff were trying to get her to quit.
I’m not tipping my hairstylist when I have to wash and blow dry my own hair plus buy my own hair.
I always leave a tip. The type of service given, will help me select the tip amount
Once.
It took over an hour to get my food to the table and the food was meh. No tip.
Once, this lady had an attitude and was literally talking shit about me under her breathe as she was delivering my groceries
I worked at a golf course as a security officer. I was getting paid to do a job. I would never take a tip. It was an ethics thing.
We don't really tip in Australia unless we just don't want change when we've given too much
No. I've always left something even if it was a shit service
Yes if the service is undeserving (and by that I mean seriously bad).
Bad service and awful food will earn nothing more beyond the subtotal of the bill.
Never. In my more assholish days, I left a penny for terrible service.
Absolutely more than once in restaurants when the service was appalling
It's just not something I do
why not?
ill be honest thats pretty bad. like i explained to others a lot of workers depend on tips and unless you think their service is abysmal i don't know what anyone would just refuse to tip.
We don't really do it here.
Yes but it was extremely terrible service
If the service is bad
What’s tipping?
No...
Nope never everyone gets a tip
