Late Sunday night, 17-year-old Halia Culbertson was stabbed to death. Now, the 18-year-old woman charged with her murder is out on bond.

The incident occurred in a far northeastern neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio, according to the Columbus Division of Police. Officers responded at 11:48 p. m. that night. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to her lone wound soon thereafter.

I see this happening a lot. Then the people out on bond kill someone else. Why do these people keep skating out instead of being held accountable for their crimes of murder? How many will just skip town?

Because of Constitutional rights. The same rights that apply to everyone. The Constitution specifically says no excessive bail, along with several other provisions.

You should be glad these things are in place because they might protect you some day. Otherwise the authorities can just start grabbing people off the street, throw them in jail after a phony trial and throw away the key.

Five out of ten of the Bills of rights are related to this. They were put in there for a reason.

I think one of the biggest crimes of civilized society is their unwillingness to punish those who hurt others. There was a racist who attempted multiple times to murder Islamic people and he was not sentenced to prison because he had a documented mental condition. I think the judge who refused to punish him deserves to be executed for his crime against the victims family in refusing to jail him.

Judges decide if the suspect is a flight risk or a danger to commit another crime. In 2023, you can run, but they’ll probably find you, it’s too easy to track people nowadays. Don’t forget it’s that $750k or whatever goes into the government’s pocket, I’m sure that goes into funding. Most people aren’t serial killers, I’d wager most violent crimes are heat-of-the-moment, and you can trust the suspect to show up to court after a large financial commitment, plus just the knowledge that they’ll just make it worse for themselves by blowing trial. The only real sustainable chance they have for freedom is to show up to court and try to get acquitted.

I'll wager there are a lot of cases like this. Anyone who kills someone should NEVER be let out on bond. As you pointed out, some people who didn't even kill someone were given bonds of $1million, and $3 million. Why they give these punks bond at all makes as much sense as a vertical ejection seat in a helicopter.

Because of the severity of the crime, I think other steps should be put in place because of the potential of the accused to cause more damage. Maybe house arrest with that thing on their ankle and if they violate house arrest, then they go back to prison and forfeit their bond.. due to the severity of the crime, and the potential for the accused to cause more damage, I think extra steps need to be put into place to mitigate that risk because it’s happened way too often. In some cases the person knew they were going to be found guilty, so they go off and causes much damage and exact as much revenge as they possibly can before they go to jail

The key is "accused" not convicted. We don't want to punish people who may be innocent. Prison is horrible in a variety of ways and it can take a year or two to get to a trial. if someone is innocent you can't give them that year of their life back.

I completely agree. The purpose of bond is to ensure the defendants appearance in court. If the crimes are so severe that a defendant is facing a life time prison sentence or even the death penalty, bond should be denied (in my mind).
