Body Found ‘Mutilated’ Days After Ex’s Release From Jail

A 22-year-old woman was found dead in her car in a Mississippi cemetery, days after her ex-boyfriend was released from jail in Nashville, Tennessee. The woman, Lauren Johansen, was discovered “mutilated” and wrapped in sheets and trash bags.

The family had pleaded with a Nashville judge not to release Bricen Rivers from jail, fearing for Lauren’s safety. Despite their pleas, Rivers was released and subsequently, Lauren was found murdered. The family had appeared in court, urging Judge Cheryl Blackburn not to release Rivers, who was facing charges of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated stalking, and coercion of a witness from December 2023. Lauren was the victim in the pending case.

Lance reported his daughter missing to the police in Hattiesburg after he discovered that a security camera at Lauren’s residence was not functioning, the front door was open, and both Lauren and her car were missing. Lauren’s car was later found in a cemetery in Harrison County. Lance Johansen knew his daughter was dead when he saw the car, but he was not prepared for the gruesome sight that awaited him.

“When we got there, her car was in the middle of the cemetery and she was in the back of the car wrapped up in sheets and trash bags. She was basically beaten to death,” Lance Johansen told WLOX. “Her face was smashed in, her head was smashed in, she was brutally beaten to the point she couldn’t see out of either eye when she finally died and there were multiple holes in her head. I helped the coroner lift her body out of the car. It was just mutilated.”

Rivers allegedly fled when police arrived at the cemetery but was arrested in the woods several hours later. Jail records show that Rivers was booked with a $1,000,000 bond shortly after midnight on July 4.

To me our justice system is very flawed and lacks common sense. I've been watching the original unsolved mystery show and many times the people are convicted of murder and it says they were sentenced to 25 years to life but have since served their time and been released it's like what? A person that takes a life should at the very least spend the rest of their life and prison and never be released no parole for any person that commits murder that would be my rule if I was in charge. With the exception of if it was self defense. But it's not consistent because some people do get life or the death penalty for committing murder others to serve a number of years and release because of good behavior at this to me it's a stupidity downright stupidity. That's why I can't wait till Jesus comes for us and he rules the Earth for 1,000 years cuz everything will be done the right way then cuz it says he will rule with a rod of iron

I don't know enough details of this case to comment. But what I do know is that over the last few decades, the legislators are micromanaging the law more and more. This results in judgement being taken away from judges. All in the name of "fairness". Treat everyone alike, whether they are or not. Check all the boxes and make a decision based on that. Common sense and judgement not allowed. That might result in one person being treated differently than another. Can't have that.

It's time judges who release violent offenders who are known to be repeat offenders already on bail be held liable for the deaths they cause.

If a repeat offender who has made violent threats is released by a judge on bail then the judge should be held liable as an accomplice.
