Instead of the dreary, stainless steal tables and bars and sex assaults, we have prisons that were more like schools. Emotionally, we’d feel suckered.
But logically…wouldn’t this decrease crime and cut recidivism? Seriously, teach and treat crime…not just consequence.
I think that would be good, this is my idea on how I think prisons should be reformed:
First off, let's focus on rehabilitation programs that address the root causes of criminal behavior, such as substance abuse, mental health issues, or a lack of education and job skills. We're talking about things like counseling, therapy, education, and vocational training.
But we're not stopping there. It's important to provide support to offenders after they leave prison, too. Think housing assistance, job training, and access to mental health services. By doing this, we can help them reintegrate into society and reduce the likelihood of reoffending.
Now, let's get to the root of the problem. We need to address the underlying causes of crime, like poverty, inequality, and a lack of opportunities. We can partner with community organizations to provide support and resources to individuals in high-risk areas.
And let's not forget about the harmful effects of solitary confinement. It can have negative effects on mental health and increase the likelihood of reoffending. Instead, let's focus on alternative forms of punishment and rehabilitation.
Lastly, let's make sure our prisons provide safe and humane living conditions. That means access to healthcare, nutritious food, and opportunities for exercise and recreation. By doing so, we can improve inmates' mental and physical health, making them more receptive to rehabilitation programs. Let's create a system that supports everyone!
I agree with some of what you say but a huge component has to be ACCOUNTABILITY. People who have committed crimes need to earn their way back into the good graces of society.
That would be a huge improvement and greatly reduce repeat violators. However, the mentality of the people in the USA is punish, punish, punish.
Uh, that furniture in the first photo is what they put in insane asylums. If you notice none of the furniture has any sharp corners, it is impossible to pick up a chair, and just moving one of those things requires a goddamn dolly. They use this furniture in asylums and in-patient facilities for the suicidal so they can’t hurt themselves or anyone else.
Those places also hand thirty year olds a coloring book so they don’t assault the other patients—or inmates—so they don’t bite someone’s throat in two.
Fun times! You can be sure when you see furniture like THAT you’ll be in for a stimulating environment.

You’re 100% correct. In the US, our criminal justice system is antiquated and backwards thinking. Long sentences and unfriendly conditions actually increase recidivism. It makes society less safe. Even though there is all kinds of evidence to bear this out, Americans stubbornly stick to a mindset of the past. You go to Europe, where the prison cells look like dorm rooms, and the focus is on rehabilitation instead of punishment, they have lower recidivism rates. If people would follow the evidence and abandon preconceived notions from the past, we could make a difference
I think a lot of people would commit a crime to go live there, after all that would be better than living on the streets. Free housing, food, healthcare. Why would anyone ever want to get out of that and if they did, it would be easy to get back into it.
We are already far too lenient on criminals as it is, we need to increase the punishment a million fold. Especially for crimes where the victim has a life long sentence. That said I am for convicts who can undo the crime to be given that chance to fix what they did.
Sex offenders should never get out of prison, ever. As the victims have a life long sentence, why should the offender get a lesser sentence?
Freedom is overrated for many people, many will take comfort and security over freedom. Just look at how many are willing to give up rights to feel safe and secure.

Yes it would be great to see some rehabilitation centers with a better environment than the current prison look for those inmates where rehabilitation is likely. Problem is there are many more who nothing is going to make them ever acceptable to society and my personal view is they should be exterminated.

American prisons are horrible. But those pictures look more like a mental care facility - and while some may be OK, others keep inmates / patients completely drugged up so they don't cause problems. I'd actually take prison over that.

…. and yet Europe’s recidivism rate is lower. More people reoffend under the U. S. model. In fact, the land of the free a has the worlds largest jail and prison population. Harsh punishment (even the death penalty) has never been shown to be a deterrent. You have to rehabilitate people so that they have the skills to make it on the outside as well as more economic opportunity. With little in the way of rehabilitation or education, they learn from their fellow inmates and establish better criminal contacts. We return people to the streets worse criminals than when they went in. I’ve worked in a prison for 3 years. I see it all the time.
@Roxxy99 I never stated that there isn't room for improvement. I stated that doing this would be an over correction. Regardless, jail is still supposed to be some form of jail, not Romper Room. If you turn prisons into kindergarten for adults, there's no real incentive not to go back. Especially if the person is homeless, or has no family, or has no responsibilities, etcetera, or any combination thereof.
How can you overcorrect from a model that has never been shown to work? I see the revolving door daily and have interviewed thousands of inmates. Many know they are coming back as soon as they leave because they don’t have the life skills to avoid the patterns and traps that landed them there in the first place, nor any kind of education or job training to even be able to land a job upon release that they could support themselves on. Many others don’t have this kind of self-awareness but it applies to them just the same. Even with good intentions, they return at an high rate. Punishing them harder doesn’t change that reality. The punishment model doesn’t work, yet you perceive somehow that it does. Numerous studies show the progressive evidence based system used by other countries reduces recidivism. There’s a mindset here that people don’t want to be “soft on crime”, so it’s difficult to sell rehabilitation rather than punishment but can anyone point to a study that shows harsh punishment reduces recidivism? The evidence points to the contrary. It makes us less safe. Fewer people re-offending makes society safer. So if I’m perceived as soft on crime to achieve a common sense results, so be it. I couldn’t care less about appearances.
Losing your freedom and having staff supervise your daily life is the punishment, not the conditions themselves. A more humane environment with more freedoms and privileges is conducive to better outcomes with learning and rehabilitation. You’re still clinging to the notion that a punitive environment contributes to a positive outcome. We don’t see evidence of that. Not only could we reduce recidivism, we could have fewer prisons and spend those tax dollars on more important things.

Your compassion is compelling but also pointless. It seems like you want to treat criminals better than law-abiding people. Absolutely not. When you choose to be a criminal, you then lose your rights to "freedoms and privileges". That's the tradeoff in a civilized society. "Do the crime? Do the time."

Those are ridiculous statements. Even in the most progressive countries, prisoners do not have it as good as free people do. Get real. However, their prisons are more effective than ours. @Roxxy99 Someone I grew up with happens to be the lead psychologist at a prison located in the suburbs of New York City in northern New Jersey, and a guy I work with is married to a corrections officer on Riker's Island. My psychologist friend believes there need to be meaningful prison reform like I already mentioned ad nauseum, but she laughed at the idea of turning prisons into preschool for adults. The corrections officer just laughed at everything all together, used some colorful language to describe you and your ideas, and then asked me to ask you if you wanted to spend a few days at Riker's to see if you still feel the same way afterwards. So stop trying to undermine civilized society by suggesting the criminals should be treated like school children at sleep away camp.

I’m not sure how that’s relevant to anything other than to personally witness the dysfunction the system produces but I’d be happy to experience Riker’s or any correctional facility you have in mind. It’s not a secret the European system produces better results than the U. S. system. I don’t think it’s foolish to discount their approach because of that. Results over process. However, that doesn’t mean you can rehabilitate every inmate, nor can every prison be a rehabilitation center. You’re always going to have men and women who refuse to embrace help or who are effectively serving life terms and would be a waste of resources. A rehabilitation first approach though would save us a lot of money in the long run. The EU is able to afford more police officers on the streets because they can spend less on prisons. There are a number of lengthy studies, as well as those countries overall statistics, that show it’sxsn improvement over our system. I can provide you with studies but you already proclaimed yourself qualified to refute virologists and climatologists, so I’m skeptical you’d actually read them or consider any evidence. Your motivations are clearly political. Also, how exactly does less recidivism and fewer prisons cause government bloat? That makes no sense. People use fake photos, names, personas online everyday for their own reasons. This site is full of them. The fact that you can’t let this go, is about as junior high as you can get. I believe you’re a much younger person and I’m not addressing it further. You’re trying too hard to convince me otherwise. A mature man wouldn’t care about such a trivial detail. The photos are similar to what you see in many European prisons. It offends the sensibilities of many Americans such as yourself but humane conditions, pared with evidence based rehab programs, educational opportunities and aftercare has produced better results over there. There is possibly a cultural component to this but it’s not a radical idea to replicate what they’re doing. The idea is gaining steam here. We can’t do much worse than what we’re already doing. Our recidivism rates are among the highest on the planet. That’s unacceptable.

You obviously haven't been on my profile page or read any of my content or opinions at all because you'd know I've been here for 9 years (not sure why) and have been a full-time single parent for a long time now (I've posted at least one Christmas question featuring my mini-me at Rockefeller Center from years ago). We need both kinds of prisons. Prisoners need to earn their way to the softer facilities, and from there to freedom.
I know the current system does not rehabilitate, but we also have to remember there are some very serious, dangerous, people in prisons.

@Shiningtempest I worked in law enforcement for several years and I realize the challenges. Believe me, I have no love for criminals. What we need to realize is that the vast majority of prisoners will end up back on the street at some time. Those being released need to be taught basic life skills, be counseled and monitored, and be given a real chance to become productive members of society. Should they fail to integrate and correct their ways, the prison system should escalate as should the sentences. Yes, some people will never rehabilitate and they can rot in prison. Others, when given opportunity and ACCOUNTABILITY, can actually make a change. In the long run it's safer and cheaper to integrate those who can be turned.

I don't know about something that comfy, but there's no question that North American prisons are shitholes. Rarely does anyone come out of their with a sense of changing their ways. In fact, they're just universities for criminals. They learn more in there about criminality than they do out here. You lock them up in cages like animals and expect them to behave like human beings. Yeah I get punishment as a part of conviction. But I think loss of freedom is pretty tough. These euro jails teach harsh discipline, like drill sergeants, and then have classes everyday.

The author has zero clue about prisons or recidivism. Prisons are homes for people who can't deal with freedom. Most people can't understand that, but it's just a fact. In prison they get three squares, showers, beds, games, cable TV etc. On the street they live in a cardboard box in the snow. They can survive the cold because they're pumped with either meth or heroin. We need to build many more prisons in America. Prisons are expensive, but not nearly as expensive as crime.

I can assure you not all crimes are hate crimes or crimes done from full emotions, others are from greed and desperation, I think giving them a false reality could make it worse when they are released and fall into the pressure of currency again, they will adjust to this lavish lifestyle and will be good but when they reach the outside world and they gotta make payments they are gonna struggle with, they will rely on quick money again (illegal) you wanna change crime rates then the living environment has to be healthy and I don't think the solution is giving them a lavish lifestyle for a while and then throwing them back out into the cold world is any good for them, if anything it will be worse when they adjust to this lavish stuff and then have to rapidly adjust to the real world.

Actually I saw not too long ago that they did an experiment in a prison that they brought stray cats and gave them to the good behaved prisoners and they take it away if they behave bad but surprisingly they all liked their cats and they even wasted they commissary to feed them and buy them toys and things they can climb on.

@msc545. Very true. To me the prison systems need to separate those who have a chance at rehabilitation from those who don't (repeat offenders mostly). Give people a chance to make amends with society and learn practical skills, give them counseling and a support system. If they flourish, great, if they repeat offenders... lock their ass up.
