Americans have you been sheltered from your culture? Are you assimilated?

We are all immigrants in America, (except for me) so have you assimilated yet? Do you aspire to be more American? Or do you keep your culture thriving in the new world? Does it make you mad that some people assimilate or keep their culture?

Is assimilation a bad thing? Should culture be kept when crossing borders? Does it cause problems? Let me know your experiences.

Who is defining what is culture? Who has that responsibility or authority?

In the world of science, getting specific, most anthropologists would define an "American Culture". Because objectively, you could define similar behaviors, shared traditions, variations in the remembrance of history. . . but only slightly. You could talk about shared customs, holiday celebrations, etc., etc.

The problem is that many Americans don't believe they share the same culture. So you could and should define another way to identify. I just call it group identity. You can't be a member of a group, if the group does not accept you as a member. Then finally we have this nutty fruitcake idea called "race". And most racists will tell you that races have different behaviors. Which they don't realize is simply another way of defining a different culture.

So you have all these weird themes going within American society. But the basic fact is, no matter how much a person could try to act like or be like an "American", race, culture, group identity and these subjective way these terms are defined cause real issues when trying to talk about who or what is American.

At the end of the day, the Founders of this nation, did not want a nation based upon an ethnic group or a religion. The only the thing they seemed to be concerned about was race. And sure, while they were totally wrong about the concept, it is the foundation upon which this nation was built.

It was not built upon some concept of culture.

i still think there are races. each race has a culture. americans don't because they are too young of a culture and too mixed to define it.

maybe the new world wasn't built on culture because we were escaping it. but it was a culture shock to the natives and the pilgrims when they met.

I think trying to pretend race exists with no understanding of genetics, culture, human behavior, etc. is just silly.

I would advise you to at least read something on how humans develop culture, cultural beliefs, traditions, and customs.

Because that weird nonsensical fruitcake idea of race has nothing to do with that process.
