I am a Christian Turkish. I want to move to the USA and continue teaching there, but I have some concerns. Am I likely to be attacked by a racist? How safe is America?
8K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. I would argue, not very safe. First of all, people love to go on and on about how living in America is great if you are rich. I disagree. No amount of money is reasonably going to protect you from all the dangers of simply living in USA. Things like bad food standards and control meaning the food and water carries trace amounts of toxic or dangerous substances or dangerous air pollutants or whatever.
If you have options it is simply not your first choice, and then there is the problem of the society. This is a bit more hit and miss. To help illustrate the problem lets look at a map:

To put it mildly, there is a VERY large inconsistency of your life expectancy depending on where you live inside the US. To go from 59.9 - 75.1 to 81.7 - 97.5 is basically the difference between a first world country and a failed state. At the bad end we are talking Afghanistan levels of bad.
Lastly, lets talk about about social unrest. Putting aside how there is essentially a civil war brewing between the MAGA idiots and the rest of the country, there is a lot of social and criminal issues in USA right now. If we take mass shootings as an example then I remember talking about how USA had reached the point of having a mass shooting every day on this website a few years ago. Now this number is around 1.7 mass shootings a day if I am not mistaken. Things are fairly quickly spiraling out of control and I am not seeing anyone trying to stop the fall.
So yeah.. I do not recommend you go there.

Middle class Americans live very similar to middle class Europeans. I live in Los Angeles and I have been to Europe many times. Have you been to the USA?

@NewtoTheSouth Yes

@Soteris actually the US is very safe if you avoid black areas. Mainstream America has violent crime rates similar to Europe. But your large cities with high black populations have crazy high crime rates. A white person is approximately 14x more like to be attacked by a black than vice versa. Blacks cause 50%+ of murders robberies and rapes. And since George Floyd, it’s only gotten worse. But the media won’t discuss this or the fact that most of the mass shooters are on psychotropic drugs. But you repeat everything the media tells you like a dutiful lemming— good job. Keep talking about MAGA folks and you seem more idiotic by the moment

@joesheks Now you are just being a racist. Not factually correct mind you, just a racist.
Also I actually looked up the statistics regarding mass shooters recently. Only like 23% or so were on drugs and had mental issues. If you want to have want to have a metric that tracks almost 1 for 1 however you should just combine domestic violence and violence against animals since I think like 95-99% of them did that.

Seeing as you @oliviaelif would be regarded as White, you would probably want to just want to avoid the inner city.12 Reply
Asker+1 yIt's both terrifying and attractive. Regardless, I'm moving out this year to try my luck.
Opinion Owner+1 y@oliviaelif You are unlikely to ever see anything happen anywhere. You should regardless avoid living in the inner city simply because they are usually poorly policed and thus dangerous period. The further out you live the less you need to be concerned about security.
Most small towns you don't even need to lock your door.
Anonymous(25-29)+1 yThere is random street violence but you’re unlikely to be attacked. You may very well run into people who are racist in their words and actions however, especially if you venture away from an urban area.

Asker+1 yWhere would you recommend I live? I've only heard that there is a demand for teachers in California. Is California safe?
Opinion Owner+1 yIt’s hard to say. The U. S. does have a certain amount of street crime…. robbery, shootings, property crimes. Generally, crime is somewhat tied to poverty. So you should expect higher crime in poor areas and less crime in affluent neighborhoods. Just be careful where you choose to live and be aware of your surroundings when you travel. Turkey probably isn’t so different in that regard.
Asker+1 y@mb120101 I know New Jersey. I think there was a Turkish neighborhood there. It might be a good start for me to adapt. Thank you for your information, you are very kind. ❤️
Asker+1 yNo, actually there are not many such things in Turkey. We have a refugee problem and most such crimes are committed by Syrian and Afghan refugees. However, I will not give up on my America dream. Innovation is beautiful, I can't wait to meet new people.
Opinion Owner+1 yKeep in mind too that urban areas are more ethnically and culturally diverse than rural areas, so you might be more comfortable and accepted in a city.
Asker+1 ythank you for this advice🙏🏼

+1 yThe U. S. is a very safe country overall if you don't live in bad areas and stay out of bad areas or don't get involved with bad stuff.
The mass random shootings has become concerning in this country though.

Asker+1 yUnfortunately it is. Racist attacks and armed raids on schools, such as the George Floyd incident, which I have heard frequently in the world press, are a little worrying.

Racist attacks are extremely rare plus Turkish people have light skin.
Asker+1 yYes it is. In general, I can say that Turks admire America. I know people who are rarely subjected to Islamophobic insults, but I don't think I will have a problem because I am not a Muslim. Thank you for informing.

There is high level of racism in the USA, i mean they voted for Trump
Asker+1 yThis is sad. Sometimes they forget that we are all human. :/
@Soteris by all means post your stats regarding mass shooters and psychotropic drugs.
I noticed you called me “racist” but didn’t really refute what I said. Having lived around the world, I know that what I am saying is correct and it applies in whatever country in which one might be …01 Reply- +1 y
Yes yes, and you are racist. Here you go.

You will not be jumped there. People can be racist but very unlikely to randomly attack you. Worry more about your wallet if you're going to a shady area.

Asker+1 yI want to go to California or New York, but where I go will be determined by my workplace. I've been going to church for 4 years and our priest is French. He said he was serving in America and told me to go to France or Italy instead of America. That's why I'm so confused. I hope America lives up to my expectations because it was my childhood dream.
Asker+1 yI've heard that special education teacher salaries are about $70,000 a year. Is this ideal for a good life?
11.7K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. America is so dangerous it's the only country where you are 8 times more likely to be killed by a cop, than a terrorist.

Asker+1 yIt's something I've always seen in the news but I thought it was one of the media's deception tricks because foreigners think we are Arabs and terrorists because the media is doing a lot of defamation on my own country's behalf.
+1 yIt's very safe if you don't move to an American city, but stay in rural America. Any state in the middle like Colorado, Utah or Wisconsin or somewhere like that.

Everyone has a gun. You get shot at school before you win the lottery. The homeless on the streets is noticeable. Earthquakes. Hurricanes. Not many volcanos. I wouldn’t go there.
