+1 yWhy is it upsetting if others wear masks? If it’s not mandated for you, isn’t that good enough? Why are you considered about people who aren’t you? Mask mandates, ok, I’ll hear your arguments, but just anyone’s choice to wear a mask if it makes them more comfortable? Or maybe they have other conditions that make Covid risky for them, or didn’t want to get vaccinated? I had Covid twice, but I’m vaccinated, so I was totally fine. But I have my elderly father with me, and he got it and it almost killed him, he was hospitalized for like a week. I think the vax was the difference between life and death for him. I wish he would still wear a mask in public places for his own safety, not that it’s foolproof, but it’s better than nothing, but he’s a grown man, he can make his own decision.
I’m wearing a mask this week because I have a cold. I realized what a colossal asshole you are if you go out in public when you’re sick, not even Covid, just any contagious respiratory illness, just getting everyone else sick, complete strangers, with no regard for anything but your own selfish desires of continuing your usual routine, everyone else be damned. That’s just not being a good citizen.Pre-Covid, I know that’s a cultural thing in many Asian countries, masking yourself in public when you’re sick, and I really respect that concern for the common good. That’s the kind of world I want to live in and the kind of people I want to live amongst, not douchebags who are just like “I have to be sick this week, so fuck you if you have to be sick next week because of me. Suck it up, not my problem.” Nothing I hate more in the world than being sick, and I avoid it at all costs. So, I don’t wear masks defensively anymore, as the Covid concern is down with so many people finally vaccinated and the virus having mutated to less serious variants than we were getting the first couple years. But I think wearing a mask if I’M sick and have no choice but to venture into public will become standard practice for me. I feel like a way better human if I at least do that and show concern for others and not just myself. How others choose to operate, that’s out of my control, and pointless to judge.

The amount of abuse that people who chose not to wear masks took for years is unconscionable. The people imposing the mask mandates laughed in our face while they did so and wore them only for photo ops and theater. There's never been any apology for the abuse of children and for forcing toddlers into wearing masks.

... You are serious aren't you? ... The virus, even if it was carried by a pangolin or not, originated from bats more than likely. The pangolin would only have been a temporary carrier of the disease and we would not expect to find them regularly being infected by covid19.
Also, I was not limiting my criticism to China but in general. Without going into too much details, where do you think all the swine flus and bird flus comes from? The animals we eat and the animals we keep are major disease vectors for transmitting new diseases to humans. More than once a pig has gotten sick because it lived too close to the forest and caught a virus or a bacteria from there and then spread it to us and got millions killed. This is not unusual. - +1 y

We never said it was the end of the world. We said a lot of people would die.. and a lot of people have died for no reason other than to maintain your "freedom" to be stupid. As for animals? Every disease hits different people differently, not to mention entirely different species.
As such, Covid19 might be more or less severe in every animal and others might be entirely immune due to blind luck. There has been documented cases of zoo animals becoming infected where some makes it and some does not. For example a tiger in a Swedish zoo was put down after losing its battle against covid19 where as two hippos exhibited mild symptoms only.
Fundamentally however, animal-to-human and human-to-animal transmissions are rare for a bunch of reasons. This is why for example the origin of covid19 is noteworthy in the first place because it is rare but it still happens. Finding cases of human-to-animal and animal-to-human transmissions are hard since at this point the disease is everywhere so how do you prove your specific case came from an infected cat rather than all the hundreds if not millions of people all around you at any one time?

You want one example? The original infection of covid19. It shows biological roots with a strain found in bats and therefore somehow made the journey from bats to humans. The exact path is less important than the fact that an animal somehow infected a human.

You only need one, there is no reason nor requirement for any other pangolin to be infected with covid19. That is why people have a healthy respect for diseases. A virus does not need to reliably succeed, it just needs to succeed once. Also, you are missing the point of cloth masks. They are obviously not going to be as good as actual n95 masks that are fitted properly but no one said they were. What we did say is that there was a shortage of them and the people who needed them most, such as hospital staff, should have them rather than you to increase your own chance of survival.
As such, cloth masks is a backup. It does not really protect you that well but you dont have much other options at least at the start. What it does do however is reduce the chances of an infected person from spreading it again. If you meet two people infected with covid19, the one wearing a mask is much less likely to infect you.
But that is a bit of a moot point. You can go out and buy n95 masks now and you can also learn how to fit them. Of course, you might be a caveman unable to follow instructions but that falls back to the argument of freedom. Freedom requires you to take personal responsibility, including learning how to protect yourself such as how to wear a n95 mask safely.
The fact that you tried to use the correct fitting of the n95 mask against me shows that you are not taking this seriously and does not deserve the freedom that has been granted to you because you need someone to wipe your ass and fit your mask for you. - +1 y

I've noticed that practically nobody is wearing masks in the UK anymore apart from a few, probably <0.1% paranoid personalities. Everyone's fine. People are out mingling all of the time. Even people who have barely any immunities catch covid multiple times and are still fine.

+1 yBesides buildings where it's required, I only wear a mask when I'm sick. I don't get it. I've seen plenty of people wear it coving their mouth only in packed places like subways and concerts. These are not protecting you if you're not coving your nose. A virus or bacteria isn't looking at your nose and saying, "I'm not going to infect that!".

It's not like I wear it at home or when I'm walking my dog. Yet, unlike most people my age, I don't have a competent immune system. So it's in my best interest to be extremely careful. I need infusions every 28 days or else I get pneumonia. Insurance may cover a lot, but an ER visit several times a year adds up.
