Women and even some men will march to end the gender pay gap and their are some laws passed requiring a certain number of women to hired. However, all that has very little effect.

In time the gender pay gap may reverse. Already, almost 60% of recent college graduates are women and that may go much higher. Furthermore, men are dropping out and just earning the minimum income to survive.

Another difficult question. At an extreme you could argue the communist creed 'From each according to their means, to each according to their needs'. But then why would anybody work if their income was the same if they worked or not. The Soviet joke was 'we pretend to work and they pretend to pay us'.

The US federal gov't has never be able to tax as much as 20% GDP with tax brackets as high as 99% from memory. Other countries can tax as much as 30-35% GDP. There are few reasons for this.

Suppose we have a renowned surgeon who is so good everybody would prefer him for their surgery. he is quite humanitarian and does pro bono work for people who can't afford the fees he can charge.

We jack up his taxes substantially - he is rich he can afford to have a substantial amount of his income redistributed for the gender pay gap. Tax the Rich could be on a placard in the pic.

So what does this rich surgeon do?

He could simply retire because he has saved up a lot and in his judgement it is not worth it. any more.

Assuming there are thresholds for the pay gender gap tax (there will need to be to avoid low income males protesting), the surgeon probably makes a decision based on that so he works up to the limit that he thinks worthwhile. He makes a work life balance decision. More golf less income less tax = goodness.

He will see a tax consultant and maybe he finds something he will like to invest in that reduces his taxable income. He can trade income for longer term capital gains. He might find a way of sharing his income with his children.

Being a charitable caring man he might just do more pro bono finding satisfaction in that which balances out his reduced income. More satisfaction less income = goodness.

He can always relocate. Maybe to Mexico if he is US based. Don't what regimes might apply in this but you get the idea. He and some other surgeons may set up a hospital in Mexico or just work out of an existing hospital. Patients will come to him because of his renown. So Mexico gets to tax his income, not the US and Mexico doesn't have a gender pay gap tax.

The interesting question is what do women do when they start getting the gender pay gap bonus. That is quite possibly they work fewer hours. A friend of mine has received good pay increases every year and chooses to work less hours keeping her annual income the same over that 10 years. That matches a higher interest in work life balance that many women have and a leading cause of gender pay gap.

In short it is actually quite difficult to tax the (rich white) males and if you took an extra 18% out that motivates a lot of things for them to do to claw it back. Including going for work life balance themselves. This pretty much why the US Federal hasn't been able to tax more than 20% GDP as I understand it as an Australian.

It is also a pretty complex tax and transfer system too.

Perhaps women need to sacrifice work life balance for higher earnings as men do. Perhaps low paid traditional female labor needs to be revalued in it's labor cost.

No, you have got the issue totally wrong. Firstly, it has nothing to do really with gender. What we have here is a situation of "wage theft", when a person of majority ( 18+ years, man or woman), performs a job, they should get 100% of their compensation. But the facts show that women in the USA workforce, in many unfortunate cases, are getting only 83% of this money. Simply, 17 % is being stolen from them. All you have to do is give this money to it's rightful owner. You don't have to take anybody else's money, or tax someone else, to give women what is theirs in the first place. This problem mainly happens in the low, unskilled and manual labour jobs. There women ( and men) are very uneducated and totally ignorant of their rights. It is in these places that all this takes place. It is a very serious problem. There is slim to none problem in normal office work places, however again even there , at the highest level, like CEO's and boardrooms, there also a lot of it happens. NO! WTF (sorry) thats not how this works. Also the actual gender pay gap is not 18% also not 8%. Last time I checked it was around 0,9% and only around 18% without adjusted variables. The 17% difference is a social problem not a problem in actual pay grades. On the other hand the nearly 1% is. The 1% is the problem that should be controlled and regulated by law but that also is not the real problem.

The problem in Society is the rest of the 18%. The goal should not be to necessarily make it 0% the goal should be to make it fair. One reason for this is, that women are less likely to be promoted because they have the possibility to become pregnant. Note we are mostly talking about women here who choose career over family but because they still could theoretically change their minds they have a disadvantage. One easy solution for this would be to give fathers a more regulated parental leave option. That way a bushiness can't decide to promote a man over a women, based on the decision that one can take a longer parental leave, and is more likely to do it. (based on the laws to actual use parental leave, not on personal decisions to use it)

The pay gap isn't so much gendered as it is based on parenthood - women lose work options when children come along, they're usually the primary caregivers, they'll be home when the kid is sick - go to meetings, doctor appointments and so on.

Career choices: Most women do not want to own a business or become a Nuclear Physicist 2.) 27% of women are stay-at-home mothers (pew research) 3.) 58% of all businesses are owned by men 4.) Engineers for example are 16.5% women, this is also true for many other high paying professions such as finance, or doctors who are 37% women.

In Marketing, some of the more successful ones are women and there are a lot in the industry (I work in marketing). This is a high paying job path but not all industries are like this, most are not, and there is no legislation that will take this away.

There is also the reverse of this. In Business, most women prefer to work with another woman; especially one who is similar to them. They do not want to manage a man who is older than them or is close to their age. It isn't ubiquitous, but I have seen this occur so many times, and colleagues of mine have told me this.

Being a women in today's age is preferential for Men who are managers/CEOs as well. If a pretty girl who has the same/similar experience to a man, the CEO typically will go with the women. This is often due to egocentric CEO's/Managers who don't want to have a man talk back to them. They prefer someone who is subservient, and will not challenge them. I've seen many more women hired than men in my career, and CEO's/Management/Colleagues have told me this as well.

Perhaps it is a Marketing thing, but I don't think so. For example, my old girlfriend was hired a Marketing Director at 28. She didn't understand why "... everyone is so nice to me when I visit their office, I'm not doing anything special".

That day I was with her while she visited the company's clients, and she was unaware that it was because of her looks & personality. In Business, it seems like most employers prefer women. I don't mind this as I have a great job, and work with fantastic female colleagues. From my vanatage point they are easier to communicate with then male colleagues, and are much more respectful and professional.

In-secure men often feel threatened by another dude who has a better skillset/talent then them, especially when they are good-looking. I've experienced this myself, and it is so odd. I then see how that colleague treats the women who are hired, and it is completely different. I think the tables have turned.
