Did I need to pay taxes?

I started my new job on Monday but didn't log any money until yesterday. In other words, I got exactly $166.40 from work yesterday. That's all I've made. Should I have paid taxes on that one day of work?

You are supposed to pay some sort of tax on virtually all income.

Federal tax
Maybe state tax (depending on the state)
Maybe city tax (depending on the city)
Social Security
Medicare
Maybe some others

It's not clear if you are asking about your final tax, or payroll deduction. I'm assuming you mean payroll deductions.

There is supposed to be payroll deductions on all income, unless you are considered a self employed contractor or something like that.

For federal payroll deductions, it's assumed that you make that amount the entire year. So if you made $170 in one week, the federal tax should be deducted from your check assuming you'll make 170 * 52 weeks = 8840 for the year. If you start partway through the year like this, I think it's calculated as if you made that much for the remainder of the year, not the entire year. So it would be closer to 170 * 35 weeks = 5950.

If your state has a tax, it will probably be done much the same as federal. If you have city tax, it might be a flat tax no matter how much you make.

Social Security and Medicare are also flat taxes that are not affected by how much you make - unless you hit the maximum, which is over 100K.

If you did not have any taxes taken out, they might make up for it on your next check. It's also possible they are paying you under the table, which is extremely common in some industries.

- the standard federal deduction is 12.95k - if you made under that you don't owe federal taxes. State taxes I don't know about you gotta look into that one.

- the tax timeline is Jan - Dec of 2022. The salary you made yesterday will be incorporated onto next year's filing.

If you are referring to paying your taxes on the April 18th, 2023 date, these only apply to profits and wages for 2022 which only include the tax year dates of January 1 - December 31, 2022. And yes, there is a minimum that you are taxed on (for 2022) which is $12,950/year in wages. Below that, generally you don't need to file barring special circumstances.
