Do you think its Ignorant to Immigrate to a country and not bother learning the language?

I live in the UK and I understand how privileged I am to live in a country were everything is accommodated for its residents even if what we get in the UK isn't great at least were getting I'm something unlike other not so privileged countries so I can understand why we constantly have so many people immigrating but I also believe if you want your country to be great you shouldn't run away from it at the first sign of trouble and you should stand your ground and fight for what's right even if it isn't easy.

It's not rare in the UK to come across immigrants who can't speak English, choose not to or just don't want to learn. I find this to be kind of rude and disrespectful. Especially at my job at least 70% of the staff are Immigrants mainly from Poland and Romanians. Most the Polish speak English and have actually bothered to Integrate into British society but not all and for the Romanians if you've met a Romanian you can figure that one out for yourself.

It especially annoys me at work when the speak to me in their own language and when I look confused at them they act as if I'm the rude one and get angry at me for not understanding them like how Intitled can you be? They will also laugh and bad mouth us in there own language thinking we don't know what they are saying when it's pretty obvious when your the only English person in the room and they keep saying "English" in the conversation.

My work also provides translates everything for them and have translator on site which isn't exactly encouraging them to learn the language. If we stopped catering to them theyd have no choice but to learn but then when we don't fuss over them we get called racist when the UK is the biggest push over when It comes to immigration because of this.

I and my boyfriend have been talking about moving for his work to Italy and if we do I intend on learning the language because I know I will get no were if I don't

TLDR, anyway, it may be ignorant to not learn the language, but sometimes it's largely irrelevant. My mother in law has been in the US for over 40 years and still doesn't speak English, the Vietnamese community here is large, and it doesn't benefit her in a concrete way to learn it.

We're always going to be ignorant of many things, but if you have a happy life while achieving your goals, you just choose where to put your energy. That being said I could see where there's no way it would work out in reverse, like if I went to Ho Chi Minh city without knowing vietnamese, I wouldn't be able to have a livelihood.

They have large communities over in the UK too they have there own shops, schools etc but when I decided to go into there shops they expect me to speak there language and roll there eyes at me. Also how do they expect there children to get on in the world if they don't speak English that child will have to translate everything for them which isn't fair on the child. I see many children of Immigrants and have friends whos parents can't speak English and they pretty much the adult in the relationship because there parents depend on them for everything

That sounds about right. My wife and all of her sisters speak English better than vietnamese, her dad speaks fluent English as well since he owned a couple stores. My kids don't understand vietnamese, so she can't communicate with them well. It doesn't stop them from being spoiled by her though lol

Not anymore. When you hive a government that will hire translators and make signs that have 20 different languages on them. Why bother to learn a new language. ?

I wouldn't say ignorant, but it shows some disrespect for the new country and its inhabitants. It's also a bad decision because if you don't know the language you'll have a harder time with finding a job, going to the doctor/hospital or even renting an apartment/house.

I understand that sometimes people are running away from violence, persecution or extreme poverty in their countries, so they don't have time to learn a language. However, if you're planning on moving to a different place, you should take time to learn at least the basics before moving.

But its also rude to be a hypocryte and i can assure you that i know manny British people who have holyday houses in places like turkey and who imigrate in spain or france and dont bother to learn the language.

Get yourself a couple of books on economy. you'll be able to see how taxes are calulated and that there is a financial purpose behind immigration and benefits. If you think that your taxes are used to help a family that should be a good thing. I hate to break it to you its not the case.

Well they can always pop off back to country of origin if they don't want to fit in... Do you think advanced countries like Japan etc would put up with ignorant immagrants refusing to abide by the rules? About time uk governement grew a back bone and throw out the grifting chancers. I know many immagrants who come here and learn English and eager to fit in and all fucking work and pay a fortune. Bit of a rid neck to come to a country and expect free handouts and not bothering with the language.

That will never be enough. I have been living in this country for almost 20 years and i learned English before i came here. I did all my education here and uni and many English people have even told me that mu English is better than many peoples English. Yes, people should learn language of their host country. I'm polish and we have same problems with Ukrainians and Moldavians here. Ukrainians understand 50% of our language as long as they speak Ukrainian and not only Russian. Moldavians understand practically zero. Going to bakery or butcher can be a challenging experience since we have millions of them.

As I mentioned before some of these people have lived in the UK longer then me and it shouldn't be a lot to ask to speak the language if you plan on working in the UK with British people. I understand if they are new the country in school I had a German friend and she spoke not a lot of English when she first came over but we got talking and she speaks full English now and she even teached me a little bit of German

Also I bet you'd say different is I went over to a different country to work and lived and expected everyone to speak English to me. It's different if your just going on holiday because its expected in tourist areas but in everyone life with everyday people. I have no issues with people who are trying it's the ones who don't even care and only come to UK for money to send back home instead of putting in the country that they live in that's why the economy is fucked because we are putting all this money on helping them but they aren't putting any money back in

And it's doesn't slightly inconvenience myself it inconvenience the whole business and other staff because they don't listen to there training and have no idea how to do the job and everything gets messed up but when we try to show them and help they say they don't care or just ignore us and that they just want there bonus for working fast whilst we don't get one because we're being held back trying to fix there mess

A lot of polish immigrants come here because of the night life and the group of friends they have here.
