In Ireland we had a referendum to decide on whether abortion should be legal. It passed democratically and though I don't believe abortion is right or moral I believe it should be legal and left up to the conscious of women. This should be the case in America, let the people decide.

"The people" rarely decide anything in the USA, particularly when the Republicans control legislatures. Voting districts are gerrymandered to the max in the red states. It's already clear that 70% of the population at large, and 90% of all woman, want looser abortion restrictions. That's already known, but the game is rigged.

@Cubus I agree it's widespread, but it's FAR, FAR more widespread in red states - because they know they can't win. Besides, in states like Massachusetts, NJ or CT, it wouldn't make a bit of difference if you had no districts at all - they'd be blue states. Contrarywise, the Republicans are well aware that there are many states where wouldn't be the majority in a fairly districted alignment.

There are more Democratic leaning states than Republican (28 - 22) with 10 states being ranked as "competitive". Left to their own devices with no gerrymandering, the blue states have a 56% chance of retaining power vs 44% for the red states. The Repubs are very well aware of this, and that's why they do it.

In Massachussets Senate, Republicans won 27% of vote in last election, but only got 3 of 40 seats (7,5%).

@Cubus So what - that just balances out what happens in Texas, or Tennessee or any number of red states. The Republicans actually picked up more votes than the Dems overall in the mid-terms, but they did it in places that were already Republican. They had larger margins of victory in places that they were going to win anyway.

@Cubus Republicans had a net gain of 2 or 3 seats in the NY state assembly after the mid term elections I believe, on cursory examination. Anyway, the NC Supreme Court just re-opened it's own case regarding gerrymandering, because the Republicans are now in control. They reversed a decision so that there's now no checks or balances on the controlling power regarding redistricting. Here it comes.

This post was about contraceptive pills. They should be kept legal, in my opinion.
