It's all about perpetual war. That's where money is. The US for instance pulled of Afganistan not because the Taliban beat them or whatever but because they were getting set up for the Ukraine war and no longer really cared about Afganistan. The Iraq invasion was the same, the shook the tree and made Iran nervous. Then there was the Arab Spring, what did that achieve? Gaddafi and Libya sent into chaos, Syria sent into chaos, Egypt and the other north African countries becoming more US friendly, Turkey put on notice and Iraq, Saudi Arabi and Oman given a warning. Iran is like Russia being manipulated into doing things that give the US military justification to take action, similar things happened when Sadam invaded Kuwait. Now as for the US increasing military spending because of the Chinese threat well that's simply the reason they are giving to Congress for it. China can't touch the US in terms of military power or technology and they've ultimately no real need to. The US military is updating and replacing all of their cold war era equipment technology and designs. Everything is going. That's why the US military is giving away so much stuff to Ukraine, everything before 1990 is going. Now the US military would have cited Russia but the Russian military has performed so weakly in Ukraine that Congress wouldn't buy it.
Iran is interfering in US proxy states in the middle east like Iraq and propped up Assad in Syria and is now helping Russia in Ukraine, there will be a proce extracted.

China is the most serous external threat to the USA. No other hostile nation on earth is better positioned to overpower and threaten the USA and it's interest than China.

Likewise China is also the single greatest threat to democracy in the world seeing as its leaders are very much against the idea of people being free from their control.

@monorprise. That's really not the point here. I made a commitment and so did my husband, and we both knew going into it what it would entail. My plan was to do four years of ARNGUS service and get out, which I did, but since the total commitment is eight years I still have three more years on the rolls as ready reserve. I can still be recalled, and Guard units can be federalized and deployed just like regular units. I knew that going into it. Not likely that we will be recalled, but it can happen, and if it does I'll fulfill my obligation. It's not like I can refuse anyway. But since I'm now pregnant with our first, who knows how that would impact any recall.
