You have to take republican “concern” over the debt with a grain of salt. Historically, deficit spending is worse under GOP control. They tend to cut taxes and tack the shortfall it causes onto our national debt, whereas democrats are willing to raise more revenue. The 14th amendment argument has been brought up by past presidents as well. It’s possible the debt ceiling is unconstitutional. I’m actually curious how the court would interpret that section. Does it only apply to debt incurred from suppressing a rebellion or debt in general?

I do agree that we spend too much on defense. I would reduce the number of federal civilian employees as well, including putting the Energy Department functions under the DOD and Commerce, and Education under HHS. I'm surprised to hear that you want to make cuts to Medicaid. Medicare will have to be reformed since it's the biggest unfunded liability in the world.

As for Medicaid, I'd try to get the working poor off of it by mandating that a percentage of their income go to premiums for health care (something that I think should be extended to everyone, similar to the German public insurance system).

Retraining isn't all that easy, especially if you're older than 40 and your community lost a significant part of its job base when a factory closed. And what if they have a family and a house that isn't that easy to sell?

To be fair here, neither you nor I know anyone who has been the victim of structural unemployment, and I wish we could hear from some who were and how they dealt with it.

At the end of the day, you have repeatedly insulted US workers, especially blue-collar ones, and your comments here indicate a lot of condescension toward them.
