What do you think about the Jordan Neely protests in New York?

I don’t know a ton about it. From what little I do know, I’d say the law, if you’re going to have it, should be applied in a black-and-white manner to ensure application. The behavior of the victim is somewhat irrelevant. We need to get away from this psycho mentality where anyone who gets the least bit physical with anybody is subjected to vigilante death penalties. Not all harm is “fear for your life” harm. It sucks to get your ass kicked, but to a degree, you gotta just withstand getting your ass kicked a time or two in life, even when you don’t deserve it, at least in your own perception. That’s just a peril of living life on Earth. If someone pulls a lethal weapon on you, fine, all bets are off. But we have to get out of this fucked mentality of “well, they COULD’VE killed me, technically, if I got knocked out and then hit my head on a fire hydrant”, or “I don’t know what their intentions are”…. these are excuses made to give oneself license to get themselves out of an ass kicking, oftentimes. That’s the mentality that gets innocent people shot for turning around in a stranger’s driveway, ringing the wrong doorbell, or most recently, being a kid playing hide & seek in a neighbor’s yard. This paranoia is absolutely nuts.

Anyway, re: Neely…. I’m sure he didn’t intend to kill the guy, but I don’t trust the character of the average American these days to readily accept any form of civilian vigilantism. And unfortunately, manslaughter is manslaughter. Doesn’t matter if the guy was running around punching old ladies, you still can’t kill the guy, even by accident.
