For the most part you don't HAVE to call the cops. If somebody breaks into your house and steals your stuff and you don't want to report it, you don't have to. If there's a dead body in the house as a result of it, you have to call the medical examiner/coroner, but they'll call the cops. Somebody pickpockets you, you don't have to call the cops. What situations are we talking about?

"Protection" is an affirmative act. There aren't any police at every home and intersection to protect you. That's why the courts found that way. How are they going to protect you if they aren't there? If they aren't there, and have a DUTY to protect you, then you could sue them. That would be stupid and grind the whole of society to a halt, so the courts found that way. Quite some time ago.

You do need to call them for police reports say for a car accident when going through insurance. You don't have to call technically but I think the idea of police is to thwart some criminals. Their mere presence is supposed to allow for that.

Do I think that works. Yes and no. If a cop doesn't want to help say a woman getting mugged in his presence then they shouldn't be a cop.

It's not for everyone to be in this tough of a job but, I don't want to pay taxes to law enforcement they won't enforce the law when they see it being violated like a woman being mugged and just walk away.

@Friendlybro79 I don't know any cop that wouldn't help someone getting mugged in his presence. Other than the occasional traffic infraction, I don't know any cops that won't enforce laws. I don't understand what any of this has to do with the cases. "No legal obligation to protect [you]" releases them from liability of whatever happens OUTSIDE their presence. You can get a restraining order against someone, and if they violate it I'll arrest them, but I'm not camping out side your house to make sure they don't show up. THAT is the legal consequence of the ruling, which is why they were ruled that way to begin with. This goes all the way back to 1981 in Warren v. District of Columbia, where the DC Court of Appeals ruled police officers had a general duty to protect the public but had no specific legal duty to individuals.

YOUR safety is on YOU. Police respond to crimes, primarily. Their presence may have a deterrent effect on a great many crimes. Few people commit assault in front of an officer, yes, but their primary duty is to apprehend people who have committed a crime. They aren't personal security detail however because we don't have enough for the population to just have a cop following them around all day to protect them.

wow... didn't know that, but makes sense according to what I've seen. twice I've seen cops ignore the plight of helpess women being abused or trafficked. no law visibly broken. I've seen cops ignore th edangerous males and beat the female. they minimize risk by going for the weak.

Wait what? What are is their purpose if not that? I mean here every citizen is required to help you, but police is specifically required to stop and prevent crime. I have to translate but their legal requirement is:

to protect Citizens,
protect rights of citizens,
fights and solves crime,
helps with first aid and helps at every accident

collect evidence,
has environmental protection duties,
secures events, gives advice and tips to citizens.

I'm assuming part of American police reluctance to engage is not wanting to get shot by the more guns we have than people in the US. No obligation ruling is so they don't get sued if they can't get there in time. Its like the fire department has no legal obligation to put out your house fire because if they did and they weren't able to get there due to say fires started by BLM protestors you could sue and who pays for that? You may say the city but ultimately its taxpayers.

You don't have to obey the law, is it a crime unless you are caught? We've all broken a few laws here and there. But if you want to avoid jail or crippling court costs its best to be legal. The Police's main role is to enforce the law.

Yes, I agree with this. My cousin acts out against me, she calls me names, threaten this morning to stab me, she could not take small sounds it was making her angry… But she has been on illegal drugs for years, etc. So I called the police many times, and the last time the Woman officer ask my cousin if she wanted me removed from this house, and mind you I called on my cousin for her throwing things and acting out in angry… Mind you, the police refuses to take my calls seriously.
