First off, it's a tough job. They deal with some ridiculous stuff, with ridiculous people, in ridiculous situations. Generally speaking, they earn their paychecks.

Also, though, anyone living in reality knows how corrupt the overall police system is in America. Um, a spouse of my sibling, is/was a decorated veteran and eventually became a cop in San Diego. He got stuck working nights and they'd park their car behind an establishment and take a nice long nap, in between calls obviously.

My sibling... yeah, she drives like a rage monkey and anytime she's pulled over says her hubs in a cop... poof, no ticket. She laughs at how the cop pulling her over gives her an annoyed look, just before letting her cruise on.

This is the innocent stuff. The 'blue shield' protects so much more awful stuff it's really disgusting. Again, these cops perform a difficult job but yeesh... there's no easy fixes other than blowing the whole thing up and starting over. Which obviously won't work either.

He is talking about the fact that the Supreme Court and federal judges regularly rule that the police has no constitutional or legal requirement to protect civilians, as in they can stand by and watch you be attacked without doing anything wrong. Fairly topical since Uvalde in a way.

Well, my now-deceased father was a police officer and if you asked him, he would tell you his job is law enforcement. It didn't matter if he agreed with the laws or not unfortunately. He worked for the government and enforced legislation.
