According to the British code of conduct for police "primary duties are the protection of life and property, preservation of the peace, and prevention and detection of criminal offences". I'd have thought every police force worldwide would have a similar function otherwise what's the point of them.
Well police better stay out of the way when the public decides to take things into their own hands then.
Personally I don't trust the cops and in a lot of cases their presence will actually make things worse. Sure, you could point to a few examples where I would love to have a cop there but that doesn't change my point.

This chart could also be used to show female enlistment rates in times of war, and number of new LEO grads upon being legally required to put themselves in danger to save others.
Police to protect me? From what, using my own decisons at a threat? if a policeman tried to "protect" me... I'd feel like I should just start diggin' my grave right then and there.
