Why do some conservatives say racist and homophobic comments and then deny saying them?

it usually goes like this, a conservative makes a statementv opposing gay marriage or making a derogatory racist comment and caught on camera and then when provided with video evidence, said POLITICIAN and their acolytes deny they said it. Like trump has a history of making derogatory and discriminatory statements like enjoying grabbing women by the private parts and later him and his supporters deny making the statements. As far as their supporters goes i think they want to be able to do the same offensive things and get away with it.
