Moral dilemma question?

You are an eyewitness to a crime: A man has robbed a bank, but instead of keeping the money for himself, he donates it to a poor orphanage that can now afford to feed, clothe, and care for its children. You know who committed the crime. If you go to the authorities with the information, there's a good chance the money will be returned to the bank, leaving a lot of kids in need. What do you do?

Turn the robber in, right is right

Report to the authorities. If he committed one crime it’s likely he will commit another. Plus if I know who did it and I don’t report then I’m complicit in the crime.


But will also recommend the bank offer a low interest loan to the orphanage to cover costs for the kids if the money is returned.

Yes. As a citizen we must respect the laws and report illegal activity. A criminal could have just as easily robbed the orphanage or caused harm.

This reminds me of a dilemma we had presented in college in a management class. The professor said that a wife was dying of a disease and the husband couldn’t afford to buy the medicine to save her life. She asked our class what we thought the husband should do.

So what would you do in that situation.. say it’s your husband who’s about to die?

I would rob a bank. But I would never hurt someone while I rob them.

I forgot to mention that the professor separated us to discuss this into groups of girls and guys. Us guys did agree to rob the bank as we valued the wives life above breaking the law. However the girls chose to let their husband die.

Our professor said this was an example of how men and women make decisions. She said men tend to believe in hierarchies and ethics. And said women tend to care more about the community and how breaking the law would bring shame to her family.

First off the kids need the money. Second you dont know why the crime was commited or who did it, getting involed is dangerouse. Just go on your day and act like nothing happened

There’s the letter of the law and there’s the spirit of the law.
After buying as many properties as I have o have no pity for bankers. They’re the cause for as much misery in this nation, almost as much as lawyers.

I think this is a perfect example where justice and compassion seem at odds. But if we let compassion win, we are looking at short-term gains only. A longer view, which is more accurate, would be to always let Justice stand and do our best to be compassionate.

Yeah thats true. It depends on the situation. I wouldn't have told anyone tho if he donated the money. But I understand why people would.

Because I believe he did a good thing. I dont think breaking the law always needs to be evil. Sometimes it can be done for good too. But I'm not saying its okay

You are right, following the law is not always evil. In fact laws can be bad and in some cases following them is what is evil.
But he did both a good thing and a bad thing. So how to judge what's best to handle it?

Let me tweak it a little, which may make it easier. The bank holds the cash of many individual people. So, instead of robbing a bank, which is faceless and easy to not feel any compassion for, what if he robbed 25 old ladies of their pension checks and donated it to the orphanage. What then?
