Why are republicans so obsessed with banning tiktok?

First off, that's a bipartisan stance, and opposition to banning it also includes more libertarian members of the right. It has also been prominently used as a bait and switch because the last major attempt to ban it actually had nothing to do with banning TikTok, and everything to do with basically expanding the patriot act and giving government more direct control over online publishers at a whim. One of the sponsors (Lindsey Graham) infamously got flustered in an interview with Tucker Carlson when it became evident he either had no idea what was actually in the bill, or flat out lied about it.

TikTok is a massive data harvester with algorithms specifically aimed at promoting stupid behavior and addictive traits as a form of social engineering, particularly targeting children. It either is, or is about to start using AI to amplify its impact as well.

In my opinion, virtually all social media should be clamped down on if not banned outright, especially for minors. TikTok gets special disdain mainly because of it being directly affiliated with (owned and operated by) an arm of the Chinese communist government, and the fact so many minors are using it to get exposed to gender ideology, sexual grooming, dangerous "challenges," and psychologically dangerous amounts of screentime even when compared to other apps.

Just because I am American doesn't mean the government gets a pass just because it is the US government, I am not fake patriot like you.

One of the functions of the government is to protect it's citizens. Even though the current administration is failing miserably at doing it some of the individual states like Montana and Texas are trying their best to do what the feds are either too incompetent or too corrupt to do it.
