Because we've seen the party that was (emphasis on "WAS") more closely aligned with our egalitarian, meritocratic beliefs cast them aside, adopt open, unambiguous racism and sexism ON TOP OF overwhelmingly seeking to curtail free speech and abolish due process. You'd have a crazy look in your eyes, too.

Many conservatives DID, in fact, back when Reagan came to power, and pushed the Republican party toward what 95% of them would've called "utter batshit" just a few years prior.
