I'd have to say that in the moment, my love for my pet is going to trump all.
It goes beyond any logical argument, no matter how much I might agree with human life being more valuable than a pet.
It's just one of those things that is as it is.
I can imagine my mindset being that I'll save my pet, then the person.
It's inconceivable that I'll be standing there with someone telling me that I can save only one. Why the hell don't they jump in to save the person?
It's just a ridiculous scenario designed to self-inflame the asker when receiving answers that they don't agree with.
I'd save my pet.
Family first, and I'm not risking my life for a stranger ever.
I hope you are left to die and all of your family
@DarkLegacy Nah I'll be fine. Can't say the same for people who risk their lives at a whim though, they have much worse chances than me.
My dog and a stranger were drowning...
Stranger: Save me!
Me: I'll call 911
911: What's your emergency?
Me: My dog and a stranger are drowning, what should I do?
911: Are you a really good swimmer?
Me: No.
911: Then only try and save one of them, or all three of you will drown.
Me: Gotcha!
Stranger: Well, what did 911 say?
Me: They said you're gonna drown.
It's real simple to choose to save an animal we love. But the better choice is to save a person who has family and friends. Our pet only serves us. We have no idea what value to human lives and connections that person has. And just maybe they're a great veterinarian too.
What connections that person has? Osama bin Laden had friends and family. Not my job to risk myself to save him. His "value to human lives" isn't my concern either. His value to MY life is nothing, like any other stranger, whereas my pets have value to MY life... you know... the one that I'm risking.
It is exactly the family and friends of that person they should be thinking about. It is them they will have to answer to
@DarkLegacy Okay I'll answer to them after I save my pet.
I've actually talked to the families of people before who ended their journey prematurely. Didn't bother me then either. In those particular instances they got that way over bad life choices. The drowning scenario may be due to no fault of their own, and that's unfortunate for them. 330,000 people die every day. Every one is a tragedy to their family (well statistically some don't care). How many of those 330k should I concern myself with or "answer to their family"? which I'm not even sure what that means.
@BoopBoopBeep not the same thing, you talking to the families of people you did not leave to die
@DarkLegacy Yeah I have, as well as the families of people I had an even more active role in.
@DarkLegacy I don't think you're going to have to answer to anyone, Dark Legacy. If you do nothing, you will never be known to their family or friends. Only if you save someone, you might be. But in the case of some rescuers, they leave the scene or never leave their names. Just do their jobs and go.

It's not even a decision for me. Wouldn't even need to be a stranger.
Obvious scum
@DarkLegacy I'm shattered that some rando guy doesn't approve as if that somehow negates everything else I've done in life.
@BoopBoopBeep He's just being a big ole dummy. The idea that a person is scum just because they won't put themselves in danger unless it benefits them, is just retarded. Self preservation is a good thing.
I'd still save both. Having either a pet or a human drown on me won't be on my conscience!
Assuming I know NOTHING about the human, aside from that they're human, I think any normal person would want to save their fellow human. Fuck the pet. I'll buy another one
Most animals can swim, aka doggie paddle, so once I see my pet is swimming good, then I'll go after the stranger.
Human obviously, anyone who does otherwise should be prosecuted and their pet put down
I have no legal obligation to put myself in peril to render aid to you in my country. And any entity sending people to put down my pet better send bachelors.
Fuck that.
Screw the stranger, I'm saving my pet.
I'm not risking my life for anyone but a close friend or family member, and pets are family.
My pet. I don't give a fuck about some stranger.
my pet. the stranger might be a douche.
Saving my pet.
The person.
