What would you do if an HOA came into your neighborhood and tried to force you to sigh up with them?

They come to your home, try to convince you that you have to, trespass, try to have you fined repeatedly.

I know what I would do.. At least where I live, we have castle doctrine. I would escort these people off of my property at gun point, and make it clear that if they came back it would cost them their lives.

I'm confused. Around here a "HOA" is an association of people who own property where there is also some property in common. Things like condos, or housing developments where there is some land held in common by different owners.

What is the situation you are talking about. Is it a case where you own your home and all its property and someone else is forcing you to sign up?

Some times HOA's move into neighborhoods to "Keep property values up", Or In the case of a friend of mine, he owns a farm, A housing development was put up, which borders one side of his property, and they tried to force him to sign up for the HOA.. Even went so far as to try to have leans placed against his property because he refused to follow their rules and refused to sign up.

If its his property, how can they put a lien on it? What is the legal status of a HOA if the house was not purchased as part of development that had some property in common?

Just looked, in most places in the US you can not be forced to join a HOA that didn't exist when you purchased - no matter what the HOA may claim. That suggests its time to get an attorney and sue them for harassment

If you own your house and grounds the HOA is on a hiding to nothing, If they try to force you to sign up with them keep hold of every piece of paperwork/email they send you then SEE A LAWYER ASAP, take a copy of all of the HOA paperwork/email etc, and see what your legal options are, a Cease & Desist would probably be the first thing with a clear message that you are willing to take further legal action if they do not stop their harassment of you.
See of you can get the local press/TV station involved - they always seen to like stories of HOA overstepping the mark.
I would not go down the 'escort these people off of my property at gun point' route as they may try to get your local LEO's involved claiming 'threatening behaviour etc', I fact I'd get in touch with your local LEO's and let them know that the HOA is trying the strong arm tactics so they'll know what they'll be rolling up on if they get a call out to your neighbourhood by you or the HOA.
