Let's think this through.

• The length of the Rio Grande that forms the border of Texas with Mexico is 1255 miles.
• The perimeter of Vatican City is 2 miles.
• The perimeter of the White House grounds is less than 3600 feet or about 0.68 miles.

So, that ought to tell you something about costs...

OK, well the new White House fence is 13 feet high and will cost about $64 million. Let's make the numbers round and say $68 million because of inflation. So, that's $100,000,000 for 1 mile of fence.

Let's use that as a benchmark.

The Texas border is 1255 miles, so 1255 miles * $100,000,000 / mile = 1.255e3 * 1e8 $ = 1.255e11 $ = 125.5e9 $ = ...

$125.5 billion dollars.

So, taxpayers would have to fork over $125.5 billion to have that fence.

That $125.5 billion is to build the fence only.

In reality, the US Federal Government would have to use "eminent domain" to seize the real estate property of people who own property along the border but the Constitution requires that these people whose land is taken must be justly compensated. This means that Uncle Sam has to buy all that property it doesn't own. It does own quite a bit of it. Let's just guess and say that 1/2 of that 1288 miles is private property and that Uncle Sam needs to own the final 50 feet of land to the border. So, that means it would have to purchase 50 feet * 644 miles... Well, 644 miles * 5280 ft/miles = 3,400,320 feet. So, that would be 170,016,000 square feet. Well, there are 5280 feet * 5280 feet in a square mile so 1 square mile = 27,878,400 square feet. OK, so now that means 170,016,000/27,878,400 = 6.0985 square miles. We can make the numbers round and say 6 square miles. But there are 640 acres in a square mile, so that means there are 6 * 640 = 3840 acres. The equitable price is about $4500 per acre so that means the total cost for Uncle Sam to buy the land is $4500 * 3840 = $17.28 million. That's not much. So now the fence is up to $125.51728 billion. However, lawyers will get involved in that eminent domain crap since some people will protest. Throw in another $50 million for lawyers. OK, so we are about $125.57 billion now. Not cheap.

Is that a lot of money? Yep. Is it outrageous? Not really considering the US Defense Department budget for FY 2024 is looking like $842 billion.

But the real question is this: Is it worth it?

And the answer there is clearly and loudly NO.

Why?

Several reasons:

• The border doesn't end at Texas. Suppose this 13-foot fence stops at the New Mexico line. Well, little Mantequilla just walks around the fence which ended in Texas but not in New Mexico.
• No matter how high a wall is, you can make a ladder to go over it or a tunnel to go under it.
• Animals migrate across the border. The fence would end that and cause ecological disaster
• Lots of illegal aliens travel to Canada and then come south to get into the US. Not much of a border there.
• I could go on and on...
