As an American I feel that America lacks history and culture compared to European nations. Am I correct in your opinion?

America is a very new country compared to England France and other European nations, it seems we lack the deep culture and history those nations have.

Also our population is not based on a common ethnicity but the idea that “we are a nation of immigration” which to me is cope for the lack of cultural unity that other western nations traditionally have.

If anyone can be American then being American means almost nothing if there is no culture and ethnicity attached to it.

I do agree on the majority of positives you mentioned but I also think that there are pros and cons.

But of course I love my country I merely see shortcomings.

i think it's pretty true, the reality if that American lost their culture cause they mixed too much and abandoned their original countries (at the beginning of the creation of American, people who colonized America abandoned their true countries to live new life and abandoning their old one who they deem as too constrictive) so while searching freedom they abandoned their culture to create a new one but they didn't really create any new one and the old ways of American culture of freedom and starting to the bottom to go to the top doesn't seem to exist anymore (or a lot less than before).

The only things I would say who's good in American culture would be the colonial house and the old skyscraper, I find their architecture style very pretty and it only exists in America. I especially love the old neo gothic and art deco architecture of skyscraper and the colonial house of the South.

I think there is some good and bad with America when it comes to culture.

Some of the architecture from maybe late 1800s until 1940 was interesting with Neo gothic and art nouveau.

Lol! It always puzzles me that Europeans are so fascinated with our skyscrapers. I guess maybe because they aren't as common in Europe.

I think they look cool from afar, when you can see a whole skyline of them, but from up close, I find them quite boring.
But you're right that the skyscraper is one piece of architecture you can call distinctly American, as they were invented here.

As for Colonial architecture, you guys have those kinds of buildings in Europe, because they originated there, obviously. Though I'll admit, in some cases, the Colonial archive is prettier. We also have
Spanish colonial architecture, but a lot of the colonial towns are not original sadly and have become tourist traps.
Honestly, you have to go the Caribbean and Canada to see true Colonial architecture.

That being said, there was a time when German almost became our official language. It was actually the official language in some towns in Pennsylvania, up until the 1950s. But somewhere along the line, the original culture of the immigrants got lost. Of course the Cajuns and Acadians not surprisingly have preserved their French culture and language, but their numbers are very small. Surely, if the US has been colonized by the French instead of the British, the Colonial culture would have been preserved.

Even Canada has preserved its British roots.

Other places suffered much worse under Colonialism, yet the US is the only country I can think of that was colonized, that completely broke away from its Colonial roots, aside from our language, laws and a few buildings.

Most places that were colonized already existed as nations or empires. The US was basically colonized from scratch. There was nothing here except a few tribes. But South Africa was the same and is still very European. So I honestly don't know why the US is an exception. I just know Americans love to do their own thing. Maybe the only thing that really defines us as "Americans" are our politics, laws and pop culture. And maybe football.
But you're right, if someone asked me to define what it means to be an "American", I wouldn't know what to tell them. That's why I think Americans feel more connected to their ethnic roots and are so obsessed with DNA tests and tracing their leanage.
You hear people say, "I'm proud to be an American", but what does that actually mean?

The concept of America as a nation is relatively modern, but if you go back before colonialism, we have tons of history. We have ruins and villages that are older than Machu Picchu. But I get what you're saying. America was founded by Europeans, but aside from the Cajuns and Acadians, I've felt we haven't really preserved our colonial identity. It seems the French regions only do this. So I agree with you that America lacks one true national identity that unites us, as it's simply too diverse. America is a weird country, in this aspect, because like you said, it's basically a nation of immigrants. There is no such thing as "American ethnicity". I couldn't tell you what defines me as an American. I think that's why so Americans identity much more with their ethnic roots, then their national roots. Yes, they are proud to be "American", but what does that mean? I kind of understand now why people identify themselves as blank American, rather then just American. A lot of Americans are extremely nationalistic, but at the same time have been unable to establish any sort of identity that unites all of them

There's plenty of history here.

As far as the USA being a melting pot, it is, and that's what is so grand, but can also be sometimes problematic.

One could argue that the diversity of culture in the US is way beyond what could be found anywhere else in the world.

There are "Little Italy" types of communities all over the country from numerous fatherlands and cultures.

We are who we are.

European cultures do have fairly firm distinctions. That's the way it is for them.

Germany didn't exist politically as it is until the latter 1800s, yet culture runs deep there.

Part of the problem with our nation as Americans is that we've got all this touchy feeling that everybody's concerned about hurting somebody's damn feelings. That's where the woke people step in and push their little agenda.
