It's not about "deserving", it's about bribery- ensuring they vote for the candidates who paid them. Lyndon Johnson had some choice (and extremely impolite) words to say on the subject sixty years ago when pushing his welfare reform scheme.

The idea is rooted in the belief that black people are not only inherently corrupt, but exceptionally stupid, and will keep supporting a party that openly thinks VERY little of them, simply because they've been paid off.

That, or it's an exceptionally long con to make the Republican party look better to black people, which... look, given their history, you'd be better off just starting another party. I think the last American one that actually had the best interest of black Americans in mind was the Bull Moose, and they haven't existed for hundred years.

The whole idea was ridiculous. Does everyone who had ancestors who were mistreated 150 years ago deserve money? Where does it end? And just ones who live in California? And why would California be responsible for giving it out?

For me the problem with reparations is that its too difficult to separate victims from those who victimize them. Many people do not have >100 years of genealogical records, and even if they did, how do you deal with the large number of people whose ancestry is a mix of oppressors and oppressed.

Then what do you do about recent immigrants, or native Americans.

The atrocities were real, but there is no way to turn back the clock and fix them. We can and should fix any existing inequalities going forward

So if I understand Gruesome correctly, he wants to bankrupt municipalities and gouge most taxpayers to enrich people unjustly who didn't do the work to get the money? Does that not describe the very slavery he claims to be making these 'reparations' for? Who are the perpetrators and who are the victims of US-based legal slavery in 2023? Let the living victim of slavery in the US file a claim against the living perpetrator of slavery in the US and be done with it, I'll wait. There are living victims of slavery in some African countries, some Muslim countries, and China, but we are not allowed to talk about that, and even if we were it would be dangerous to try and collect in those places. Much safer and easier for these cowards to run their mouth in a western nation aboit events of centuries ago while doing nothing about the current victims.

I would not automatically be against reasonable payments made to people who are still living and who actually did personally suffer under Jim Crow, but all former slaves and all former slave holders are dead. So is the general public supposed to be taxed to pay for this? How is it awarded? What if one's ancestors were all abolitionists? What if some ancestors were slaves and others were slave owners? What if one's family did not even move to the United States till after the Civil War? Seems like an attempt to buy voter loyalty, not an actual attempt to compensate those who suffered.
