For one thing, we are well over a century and a half removed from the end of slavery in the United States. The people today who never owned slaves do not owe reparations to people who have never themselves been slaves. And no, you cannot reasonably hold that guilt over an entire race of people.

For another, following from that, many of my ancestors weren't even in the US when the Civil War happened. Those who were here had only been here since, if memory serves, the 1830s and were in Illinois, which was a free state. The rest were still in Poland and Italy. My grandmother's parents immigrated here from Italy in the early 20th century. Again, good luck holding me responsible. If you're going to tell me that it's because I have white skin... there's a word that escapes my memory, something about holding a certain race in contempt... I don't know, I'm sure it'll come to me.

Most of the people pushing this would presumably call themselves "progressives", who often tell religious conservatives like me that we need to stop living in the past and move forward. Yet, somehow, they don't seem too keen on leaving slavery where it is. They're grasping at straws and pushing all these goofy narratives about how everything in American culture and law is somehow rooted in or owes its existence to slavery, which is laughable nonsense.

Finally, how would the government go about making this happen? You'd have to research black person's family history to verify that they were descended from slaves, where they were, how long they've been here, and so forth. Then you also have to beg the question of a white woman marrying a black man, or a black woman marrying a white man (or interracial couples having children out of wedlock). And here's another important question. How would divorce factor in? The divorce rates today would make this practically impossible.

Slavery was a terrible thing and it shouldn't have happened. That, however, does not justify reparations being paid today.

Most people for most of the time have been slaves. As the Roman Empire faded they converted landless farmers into serfs who were slaves. Lack of conquests caused a slave shortage so they had to do something.

Logically slaves could be posthumously granted reparations and then descendants could get equal shares in their ancestors inheritance. I don't see how this could work with serfs.

Hello no, the Egyptians had slaves from Africa long before the United sates did and it was the blacks that captured the African people and sold them into slavery. At that time no white man could go to Africa without black guides. The different tribes sold captives from other tribes as slaves so they wouldn’t have to worry with them.
