The fundamental, defining characteristic of conservatism is they they believe there must be a hierarchy, in groups that the law protects but does not bind, and out groups that the law binds and does not protect.

"Rules for thee, not for me" is not just a quip, it is the cornerstone of a conservative world view.

The right is in no way a law abiding group, they view the law as a cudgel to wield against the other, while always having an excuse why it does not apply in their case.

No, I believe the law applies to everyone equally and I'm a conservative. Rather, I believe it SHOULD. I OBSERVE it does NOT, but that's not an intended consequence that's a defect in the system. There's nothing I hate more than the cronyism and elitism of those who have a different set of rules applied to them. Working inside the beltline though, I can assure you that is not soley a conservative thing.

I also disagree that there must be a hierarchy. The overwhelming majority of my real life friends are from a former job, so by default they're all conservative or libertarian (just not a lot of bleeding hearts in that field). The concept of a hierarchy is antagonistic to each of us. We go do what we do, at least in part, because there are people getting f'ed up (like how I kept it classy?) that can't do anything about it, so we go and remove that power imbalance.

You can say the right isn't a law-abiding group but I don't remember many of those ANTIFA riots being chock full of right-wingers...

Conservative and liberal ideologies are both messy collections of lots of ideas, some of them continuously changing.

I think the biggest difference is that conservatives believe in individual freedoms and responsibilities, liberals believe in government oversight and control.

Written that way it sounds pro-conservative - but consider: Conservatives include in these rights, the right to act with bias. Their responsibilities, include letting people and their children starve if they can provide for themselves.

OTOH, Liberals wish to control people, down the very language that they use. The are willing to take from those who are productive and give to those who are not

conservatism is more about telling other people what good behavior is, work ethic, whether they do it themselves or not.
