Why do people assume I don’t have money?

So I was having a follow up for a minor surgery for a cyst at this private health care clinic in New York. I was asked at the end whether I had the money to pay and also recommended the cheapest follow up creams. I’m just wondering whether they did this due to my age, I’m 27, or because they judged me and thought I couldn’t afford it? It was only a small sum though about 200 dollars the follow up treatment.

i would say no matter if you're rich or poor, nobody would spend more money for something that functionally does the same right? so unless there's a major advantage to the more expensive option, it would be dumb to buy the more expensive option right? so when a doctor suggests to you the cheaper option, they are assuming that you don't wanna spend more than you have to. it's not assuming you're poor.

so your follow up question to that suggestion would be: what are the advantages of more expensive options?

they ask every patient. not just you.

cause even if a patient has the money, they might wanna choose a payment plan instead of paying all up at once.

Nowadays, everything is so expensive and people will be upfront if you can afford anything especially private healthcare. I don’t take offence if they ask me. And I’d be happy to get cheaper recommendations if the effect is the same.

Maybe they didn’t mean anything by it. They even ask if you have insurance if the bill is huge. Hope all is well with your health
