I protect myself from scrutiny.

I play dumb to fit in.

I do it to publicy entrap others in their own stupidity.

In my opinion im not too bright, but the people I've had the opportunity to engage in conversation with tend to be fascinated by my level of thought and intellect. I don't "play the fool" which in your scenario would make me the "fool".
