People obsessed with race can always find a reason to be mad but it is hard to predict and often makes no sense to me.

Rachel Zegler is of mixed race. She has a White father and Latina mother. Recently, she played Maria in the West Side Story. It is essential to the story that Maria is a Latina from Puerto Rico. People might have complained that an actress was chosen who is part White, but they did not.

Conversely, many people go bonkers over the equivalent racial mismatch by which Snow White is a fairy tale from Germany and therefore can be expected to have mainly White characters. Different from West Side Story, race plays no role in the story itself.

This makes no sense and as a European U. S. institutionalized racism leaves me puzzled.

If we are only talking complexion, not race, I may agree that Rachel Zegler is not the best fit as Snow White's skin is supposed to be white as snow. The raven hair and overall beauty fits, though, so there is no need to be overly picky on this point.

The last time this story was attempted, Kristen Steward had the correct vampire skin, but against queen Charlize Theron it was not Steward who was "the fairest".

The fact that they also abandoned the 7 dwarfs and apparently defining elements of the story just goes to say this "Remake" has little to do with the source content and is being falsely advertised as a Snow White movie to cheat us out of our money.

@monorprise - The white skin plays no role in the story, though, only her overall beauty does.
The 1937 animated movie introduced a non-consensual kiss which is not present in the source version and seems to be borrowed from Sleeping Beauty, a different fairy tale.
Anyway, these are folk tale, not great literature, and there were originally many versions in oral tradition. The ones captured by the Grimm Brothers were heavily sanitized. For example Sleeping Beauty gets woken up by fucking, not kissing, in popular versions but only after already giving birth in her sleep.

I think its disrespecting the Snow White tale. Its a German originating medieval story, of course back then Germany was populated by white people. It would be nice if they only claimed a movie was a "remake" of a classic film or story if it generally followed that story.

What Disney is calling "snow white and the seven dwarfs" remake features neither Snow White nor seven dwarfs, and seems to abandon the defining plot as well.

So this basically amounts to false advertising, to get us to buy something under the guise of it being something else entirely. This of course only once again demonstrates that we really can't trust the people who own Disney anymore not to take advantage of us or sadly even just not to groom our kids.

The idea of needing to make up for "whites only media" is bollocks in itself, and you certainly don’t do it by turning existing characters black.

There is this thing called equality people (often hypocrites) claim to want between white and black people. And by this equality thing, as in treating people as equals, if its racist to turn a black character white, its equally racist to turn a white character black. Just as having a black only movie would be just as "un-diverse" as a white only movie.

And for the record, this is not just a black or white thing.
Depending on what mangas American movie studios adapts in the future, I would be just as pissed at them turning Asian characters white. (Or black.)
