Since Trump entered Republican politics, the party has underperformed in subsequent elections. The Democratic party itself isn’t popular either but Trump is a major drain on the independent swing voters you need to win general elections. The “red wave” didn’t come to pass in the last couple of elections. I wouldn’t count on anything being different this time around either. The first lawsuit challenging his eligibility to even be on the ballot under the 14th amendment has already been filed. Moving past him would be the best thing for the GOP’s sagging fortunes.
