No. But as we progress as a species the speed of our knowledge increases.

Like here in the United States the number of people with college education has never been higher. But we still have a deficit of skilled workers. It's one of my biggest knocks on post high school education. Most kids go to college because there parents tell them to, or it's the next step, or thier friends are, without much clue as to what they're trying to accomplish. And I don't BLAME these kids. I blame thier parents and colleges. They're the adults they need to do a more thorough job of helping kids focus. I've seen most these college advisors. Most of them resent the students. And ate only trying to push them into programs to fill thier own quotas.

Typically the end result is your avg. Student ends up with a bland liberal arts degree that says they attended college and completed the credits, nothing more. They have no area of expertise and join a litany of other kids still wet behind the ears fresh out of college looking for a successful career in a world of jobs that has little use for them.

In short, no we're not becoming dumber. We're becoming less and less efficient as a societal whole. You have a small percentage of highly skilled highly educated and motivated few dragging the bulk of country forward. We're more educated as a whole. It's just not very applicable knowledge.

In the early 1970's, Laurence Tureaud legally changed his name to Mister T because it was the only way that he, as a black man, would be reliably referred to as "Mister". The idea of someone needing to do that today is all but unthinkable.

It's hard to argue that that's backwards.

Where I live in Canada, high school grades have gone up. What you could previously do with a 76% average, now requires a 94% average due to competition from other academic students.
