Do you older GAG users remember when most men carried a pocket knife and a cigarette lighter, even though some didn't even smoke?

I remember when I was a kid, just about every adult male I knew, including my dad, always had a knife and cigarette lighter in their front pocket. We did live in the country, so it might have been different for those in the city. Does anybody else remember this?

I remember when it was common to carry a pocket knife, but I don't know if it was a majority of men. I don't remember people carrying a lighter unless they smoked.

I carried a short lock-blade Ka-Bar for many years until I lost it. I have carried other knives, but the Ka-Bar is the one I carried the longest. Now I only have a tiny key-chain blade. It's not a real knife but it comes in handy sometimes.

When I quit smoking, I continued to carry the lighter until it ran out of fuel. I mostly used it when I couldn't see something in the dark.

I think carrying pocket knives was more common in my father's generation. I know my father always carried his Tl-29 knife from his army days in WW2. That was an electricians work/utility knife.

yeppers, my dad always had a pocketknife on him.
A lot of guys I know always carry a leatherman or similar tool on their belts.
And you never know when you need to start a fire or light up someone's lung rocket, esp if she is hot.
It was part of having good manors way back when.

I carry a pocket knife for the same reason you described. It's almost impossible to open some types of packaging.

I still carry a Swiss Army knife and I used to carry a lighter even though I do not smoke.

Lighters come in handy. The other day I was on a long drive and my car charger broke, so I bought one. I definitely wish I had knife to get it out of the packaging. I had to actually make a trip to a store to get one. I am gonna keep it on me from now on because this wasn't the first time I needed one.

I have been carrying a swiss army knife for 40 years. I use the screwdrivers a lot. When I used to drink IPAs the bottle opener came in handy too.

I do carry a lighter but never did carry a knife but sure wish I did at times. Especially to cut packages open. That's actually what made me think about it. Back in the day, my dad would pull his knife out.
