Should a pizza place be allowed to charge 18% mandatory gratuity on a takeout order?

I don’t think they should. Tipping is optional. It is voluntarily given for exceptional customer service. There is a pizza place where I live that does this. I refuse to patronize them, because I think this is a repulsive business practice.

Yes they should. No matter what they call it that is an 18% on top of your order on top of the delivery charge. If someone else does it cheaper you go there. 18% is a lot especially if it's a big order.

Tipping only makes sense for places like restaurants where you pay after you were served. Otherwise, there is no incentive to provide good service (unless they want the same customer to come back) because they have already received their tip before they do anything.

hell no. unheard of. i've only heard of mandatory gratuity when 6+ guests sit down at a restaurant and they are actively being served. i don't understand it, but hey.

That's brazen. If a German company tried that, the business regulators, the consumer protection agency or both would rip them apart.

They'd be allowed to charge for delivery though, right? Most don't, above a certain price and within a certain distance. In the US service is often, if not almost always, extra, which would mean the delivery driver would be taking a risk of not being paid for delivering the food.

You're right, and I was wrong about it being delivery prices, it's when you pick it up.

No, it should be a delivery-only surcharge. The food services around me added that (1 €) a couple of years ago when motor fuel prices rose to an all time high to help pay for their fuel cost.

Yes, but they need to be clear about that fact. It's thier business model if that's what they want to do , let them. As you said you refuse to patronize them so the customer will have the last word.

I don't know. Some mom and pop shops do for delivery. Especially farther delivery.
