Why do people talk down on me and underestimate me all because I'm quiet

People tend to wrongfully assume that those who are shy and quiet are weak-willed or have done something wrong, for one reason or another. Maybe it's because both my sister and my mother (when she was younger) were both incredibly shy and quiet, but I never understood the precise reasons why people think this way. I'm sorry this is something you're going through, though.
