Women were always the more protected class, which has its own problems to be sure, but because women are the reproductive bottlenecks of society (each woman can produce a maximum of one child per year under normal circumstances) treating them as if they were men would be the end of humanity in a matter of centuries or less.

If women suddenly lost their ability to bear children, the human race would be gone in 100 years at best. Doing something like sending only women to fight in wars would be the closest thing that would realistically be close to something like that happening.

It depends what you mean by "treated better". Men are shown more respect generally but women tend to get treated with kids gloves and expectations are lowered. So it's not even treatment but it's evenly fair.
